    Noise from the motherboard (maybe)

You can use a tube, such as one from a roll of paper towels for this. Hold it to your ear and point it at different areas in the case to narrow down the source.

    Memory rank, and Nehalem

Long time no see, I was thinking about this recently, because I finally left academia and was able to afford to build another computer for myself. That brought back the memories of this old thread. Since I know this is one of the few places where you might find someone who understands these...

My friends MAC 8 core has 32GB RAM wow.

@ yinan Can we get more info about this workstation you keep talking about. We were talking about this around the office today. What the heck did you do for an operating system? And what mb did you use?

Fixing a screwdriver scar? C1 error after striking MB with screwdriver.

Years ago I had a MB that was blown out by a bad power supply. I put it under a stereoscope, at about 40x and located the blown traces, and simply used a dissecting needle to smear the copper back together. I got alot more years out of that board.

Hard drive crashed with extremely valuable data

I don't know how ontracks prices will compare. My experiance was a few years ago, and with a fried USB stick that had my Dissertation on it. They essentially pulled the memory chip and relocated it to another board. Total recovery for 400 bucks. They don't seem to post their price scale...

Need software to recover pictures of gf's recently deceased grandpa. Please help!

Your very likely SOL as far as the laptop goes. But if you want to try something I'd download the latest hiren boot disk, and try some of the recovery programs there. If the pictures are worth it, I reccommend Ontrack, for professional recovery. I used them for a fried thumb drive once, and...

144GB RAM + MOBO Compatibility Question?

As a followup on this ASUS board. You can't lock the storage menus with a bios password so be aware that a few, a very few keystrokes you can wipe the drives. You need the pike card if you want SAS drives. If your going to fill to the max with dimms, make damn sure they are dual/2 rank...

    Quad-core or Dual-core ? Which one do I pick ?

144GB RAM + MOBO Compatibility Question?

We needed a super cruncher for metabolic modeling, which is also very ram intensive. I did post here and was ridiculed as well. The problem being that IT people don't get what scientists are trying to do. The head IT guy was very critical of the amount of ram we wanted. He changed his tune...

    6 GB or 12 GB Memory ?

Just to be specific. Some 32 bit apps are large address space aware and can use 3gb of ram on a 32 bit operating system. But only if you set the /3gb boot ini switch. Also I've been using an 8 Gb Xp 64 bit pro setup at work for legitimate reasons. I find it useful even for non legit...

    Memory rank, and Nehalem

Do you really believe I'm that ignorant, EMULEX? I do envy your liberal university. But, It's not like that here. It's a Dell only world here. The only way you can buy a computer easily (huge sarcasm) is to walk over to to IT and buy a DELL. If your lucky they'll deliver that Dell in a...

    Memory rank, and Nehalem

@Emulex, Regarding university purchasing: I hear ya, and I'm right there with ya. But I could go on and on about why it isn't simple, and how it ought to be. It's a system that needs to be seen to believe. I would rather not get into why things were done the way they were. But I assure this...

    Memory rank, and Nehalem

@tcsenter I'm guessing you left a "not" out of "Logical DIMM side and rank are the same thing". That is perhaps the best explanation of rank I've read. Though I can't say that I yet understand it all that well. I do however feel more confident that I finally ordered the right stuff. It's...
