I don't think an external hd will solve your problem. Probably the easiest way is to get a 2nd notebook hd. And swap drives when u want to access the internet. Its not that hard to swap the drives out.

You might want to just get a geforce 4 ti4200. It will run much better than either card. More ram is good for bf1942. 512mb is good, but u should consider going to 768. The geforce FX is overkill for your system. Since your cpu will become a bottleneck. A geforce 3 or geforce 4 ti4200...
