well after all this mucking around I have decided its probably best just to bite the bullet, spend a bit more and buy it direct from corsair. a good brand and i knoe itll work.
Hmmm, ok i'll look for the mobo manual right now.....
Ok heres' some stuff:
Memory Type
400-MHz DDR2 SDRAM
NOTE: Your computer supports only registered memory.
Memory connectors
Dell Precision 470 computer: 6
Dell Precision 670 computer: 6
Memory capacities
256-MB, 512-MB, 1-GB...
Is there any good places to find this out? I've read the memory guide here and at toms hardware, but they aren't too specific....
Does anyone know if having registered memory is a must?
I have looked at what they recommend for my machine (its the "dell precision 470" link in my first post) and it is all pc2-3200, and really expensive. The crucial site recommends pc2-4200 so I wonder what the limit is? why not pc2-6400? If it runs at pc2-3200 speed I dont care...
Ok I have researched online, used CPU-Z and the crucial memory selector, but I am still unclear since I have heard that as long as the ram has the same number of pins and is the same type (eg DDR2 not DDR) then it will work (although possibly not at its full speed).... So heres what I have...
Both of the chips you linked on the Intel site looked right, what is the diff between them?
I downloaded the Intel processor ID program - didn't tell me any more than CPU-z did. I agree, the choice is between the SL7TB and SL7PD - but is one the correct choice and the other not?
Type : Intel Pentium 4
Internal Specification : Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 2.80GHz
Codename : Prescott

CPU ID : F.4.1
CPU IDEx : F.4.1
Microcode : MU0F4112
Number of Core : 1
Number of Logical Processors : 2
here's what PC Wizard has to say. does...
So then, is CPU-Z the only way to ID my chip?
here is the very uninformative info from the dell site regarding the CPU
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/prod...spx?c=us&l=en&s=bsd&cs=04&sku=311-5444
i'm sure they don't tell you much since they don't want you to go somewhere else with...
Not sure what you mean by XeonMP and XeonDP is that the same as Dual Processors?
so cranford is an actual processor family?
where can i find a more up to date CPUID? i only just ran CPU-z this afternoon. is there anothe way to tell which CPU i'm running?
Uh.. Thanks.
I did realise that I needed 2.8ghz Xeon. Thanks for the obvious.
But WHICH 2.8 xeon is the question. I have looked around and as far as i can tell there are various versions of the xeon chip.
CPU-z indicated a code name of "cranford" is this the core family?
there are also...
Well I'd like to eventually get a second cpu for my Precision 470 - the space for the extra CPU seems very empty.
I've started to collect the extra bits i need (extra heatsink, shroud, VRM) and am wanting to know the exact cpu i need so that i can keep an eye out for good deals.
so this is...
