Well I'd like to eventually get a second cpu for my Precision 470 - the space for the extra CPU seems very empty.
I've started to collect the extra bits i need (extra heatsink, shroud, VRM) and am wanting to know the exact cpu i need so that i can keep an eye out for good deals.

so this is what CPU-Z says (from the registers dump text file)

Number of CPUs 2 (1 Physical)

APIC ID 0
Name Intel Xeon
Code name Cranford
Specification Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 2.80GHz
Family/Model/Stepping F41
Extended Family/Model F/4
Package mPGA-604 (0h)
Core Stepping E0
Technology 90nm
Instructions Sets MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE3, EM64T
Features NX
Clock Speed 2793.1 MHz
Clock multiplier x14.0
Front Side Bus Frequency 199.5 MHz
Bus Speed 798.0 MHz
Stock frequency 2800 MHz
L1 Data Cache 16 KBytes, 8-way set associative, 64 Bytes line size
L1 Trace Cache 12 Kuops, 8-way set associative
L2 Cache 1024 KBytes, 8-way set associative, 64 Bytes line size
L2 Speed 2793.1 MHz (Full)
L2 Location On Chip
L2 Data Prefetch Logic yes
L2 Bus Width 256 bits

and the exact same is said for the second core (obviously)

so does anyone know what cpu i need, or what important things i should be including in my searches for one?

thanks
zac

Looks like you would need a Xeon 2.80 Ghz....

Uh.. Thanks.

I did realise that I needed 2.8ghz Xeon. Thanks for the obvious.

But WHICH 2.8 xeon is the question. I have looked around and as far as i can tell there are various versions of the xeon chip.
CPU-z indicated a code name of "cranford" is this the core family?
there are also a bunch of different steppings, FSB, cache setups.

i just want to make sure i get the EXACT same CPU. I have talked with others who bought a second cpu (same type, but with mismatched stepping) and they have ended up with some big problems.

Not sure what you mean by XeonMP and XeonDP is that the same as Dual Processors?

so cranford is an actual processor family?
where can i find a more up to date CPUID? i only just ran CPU-z this afternoon. is there anothe way to tell which CPU i'm running?

XeonMP = 4way+ for servers
XeonDP = max 2way for server/workstation

http://www.cpuid.com/

If it REALLY is a Cranford, then its not worth upgrading. XeonMP's go at a huge price premium compared to XeonDP's. You're better off ordering 2x Irwindalse or 2x Paxvilles than buying another XeonMP.

Type : Intel Pentium 4
Internal Specification : Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 2.80GHz
Codename : Prescott
Revision : E0
Technology : 0.09µ
CPU ID : F.4.1
CPU IDEx : F.4.1
Microcode : MU0F4112
Number of Core : 1
Number of Logical Processors : 2

here's what PC Wizard has to say. does this mean that its a Prescott?

No, the underlying architecture is the same as prescott but Intel has different codenames for different "implementations"--Xeons are Noconas or Cranfords.

Your CPU is either a Nocona or a Cranford. I'd do check the IHS for any markings that will tell you exactly what it is.

Skimming eBay, I see this should be compatible. Else, look for Xeons with the following S-Spec:

SL7TB
SL7PD

Again, highly doubtful they use a Cranford. Its most likely a Nocona.

Both of the chips you linked on the Intel site looked right, what is the diff between them?
I downloaded the Intel processor ID program - didn't tell me any more than CPU-z did. I agree, the choice is between the SL7TB and SL7PD - but is one the correct choice and the other not?

CPU-z tells me that the voltage is running at 2.048 - the Intel list shows them around 1.3 volts. is this a problem?
