How much faster are the drives with 8mb cache compared to 2mb?

I notice the speed difference when editing large files in photoshop. Don't notice the difference in Word, or web surfing. Games? Heck, I don't know--you'd have to ask one of my kids. As for the 160GB Maxtors--there are three different varieties out there (platters of 60GB, 68GB, & 80GB)...

Zalman 400w PSU quieter than my Antec 550w Truepower?

I'm about to replace two Truepowers, a Fortron, and an HEC. Every one pumps out plenty of current, and the Antec Truepowers are quiet enough. But none of the four has Active PFC. Without active PFC, a 70% efficient PSU supplying 200 watts consumes about 570 watts. With active PFC, the same...

Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 or Western Digital SE? [Poll]

I have one 80GB WD SE, and 2 Maxtor +9 80GB drives. They're all fast but the Maxtors are quiet--I can't even hear them at idle, and seeks aren't noticable unless I'm listening for them. The WD emits a constant high-pitched whine, just like all hard drives used to do, and seeks sound like a...

    Computer Keeps Rebooting

Could be lots of things. Check for conflicts in configuration of IDE devices--I recently had the same problem and solved it only by setting CDROM as slave and HDD as cable select! (Beats me--but that IDE controller--on ASUS P4S533--is flaky and won't work if a USB port is connected to USB...

    Power Supplies...

The Fortron 350W is a great value (I have one in one of the kids' gaming machines) if noise isn't an issue. Not that it's particularly loud--it might even be a bit less noisy than average. But no PFC. They do make active PFC units, however, like the 400W FSP400-60 PFN ($60 at Newegg). Unless...

What do ya'll do with your old PC's when you get a new one?

Like others, I support a chain of family & friends with hand-me-downs when I upgrade, but I also pass stuff on to a local school with a great geek-in-training program. Your old system would run rings around the pathetic equipment most schools have. You might also consider donating to the local...

    Power Supplies...

Checkin' this thread out 'cause I'm looking for new PSUs, too. Every one you mention is good quality. For quiet & steady power I like Antec TruePower (have 2 of them), but in the U.S. they lack active PFC. Best bang for buck has to be the TT Silent Purepower 420 with active PFC--but it's...

Dual Thunderbird Motherboard...does one exist ????

No board yet--not until AMD releases upcoming 762 chipset supporting SMP.Tom just posted this review of its predecessor, new 760 chipset.

Photoshop on W2K--better with FAT 32 or NTFS?

Wow--thanks for the input. Probably NTFS. Nox--version 5.0, but I'm getting the 6.0 upgrade. Adobe says something to the effect that "not all features in previous versions may work in w2k"--sounds like cya to me, but I'll see for myself soon.

Looks like the same but one is 2 meters long and the costlier one is 3 meters.

    Dell P3-866 / i815 chipset system for $685

Looks good until I consider that: 1--It has Dell's proprietary board instead of the CUSL2 I'd prefer 2--It's still an overpriced 6.5 multiplier CPU (I'd rather OC a 650) 3--I'd have to buy a vid card I don't want (16mb Rage) or pay an inflated price for Dell's proprietary Nvidia card 4--Stuck...

Photoshop on W2K--better with FAT 32 or NTFS?

Building new PIII system for Image Editing, Word, Web, and DVD playback. Anyone with W2K & Photoshop experience know why I should choose to go with NTFS, or would FAT 32 be a better choice?

Best vid card for 2-D image editing and DVD playback in W2K?

Building new system (PIII on CUSL2) mostly for Photoshop, Word, Web browsing and would also like decent DVD playback. O/S will be W2K. ATI's bad rep for drivers scares me and I'm reluctant to buy Matrox now with G800 rumored soon. Any suggestions/warnings?

Building new system w/W2K--choose FAT32 or NTFS?

I'm putting a new system together (CUSL2/PIII) and want W2K for speed and stability in Photoshop and SMP option. Don't play games much and other uses aren't as demanding (web browsing, word processing, watching DVDs). Why should I prefer one file system to the other? Also am having a hard...
