Based on the technical support given to the vast majority of computer users on this forum, I feel that 95% of the problems people are having could be alleviated by using this simple two-step process that should *obviously* fix nearly all problems.
1) fdisk /mbr
* If step 1 does not work...
Also make sure you have Client for Microsoft Networks (in Network control panel) loaded on both machines and your network card set so it is "binded" (bound?) to both TCP/IP and Client for Microsoft Networks (also in Network control panel).
If the computers can ping eachother then it is not a hub thing; all the physical connections are set. Also since pinging works, the IP settings are correct. DONT WORRY ABOUT HUBS OR DHCP OR ICS.
Stab in the dark here:
Make sure File & Printer sharing is enabled on -both- computers, and be...
Make sure that "Obtain IP Address Automatically" is set, unless you want to assign an IP. If you want to assign an IP, go into the networking control panel and adjust TCP/IP properties.
By going after a Live!, you are throwing your computer's fate to the winds. Risky. Go for the Santa Cruz, it works great for me (98/2000/XP). As for sound quality, that card should work great (provided it works).
If you want to see what system I am running, click on the link in my signature. The computer is called T-bird.
I have installed the latest BIOS from MSI (2.8) and I still have this problem. The default vcore setting causes the voltage to run around 1.8V instead of 1.7V like it should. I can...
Not sure if this would help, but it's worth a try...
Install NVMax, it has a little button you can click under System-->Miscellaneous (methinks) that has to do with a Athlon stability fix under Win2000. It also has the sidebanding option, as well as enable 4x AGP mode for something or other. I...
3gb should be enough for WinXP. I have mine on a 5gb partition and I have lots of space leftover. I would -not- recommend going -below- 3gb, however.
WinXP should be able to boot fine whether it is on a partition with drive letter F or drive letter D. Win98 is the picky one =) *stupid C drive*.
I would go DDR if I had a Palomino. Prefetch takes advantage of DDR in a big way, so performance boosts are noticeable. Since it's only a Duron, I would suggest you wait and spend the $50 later on when it will provide more bang for the buck. You will get a performance boost if you switch DDR...
I am running BIOS 2.8 and the default voltage is still nice and high at 1.8V, so don't throw in the "flash your BIOS" as the fix-all. It doesn't always work.
As for the RAID controller taking part of your startup time, here's a link to a site where you can download a mod'd 2.8 BIOS...
Quick check:
1) make sure ATX plug is connected to mobo
2) make sure power button is connected to headers on the mobo
3) make sure "Clear CMOS jumper" is set -not- to reset your CMOS, if it -is- in that mode, your system will not start
