It's unfortunately quite a lot faster than you think.. A t-bird with no cooling lives for no more than 6-10 seconds.. And if you're unlucky even less.. This sounds mostly like a motherboard problem tho'.. But that doesn't count out the possibility of it frying your cpu in the meantime!

Did you keep an eye on your cpu temperature while working with it? It COULD sound like you've overheated.. And that you might have burned off that nice 1.4 Ghz.. It definately sounds like a heating problem to me (or cooling problem if you like *S*)
Try taking off that monster cooler of yours...

Hmmm.. Who knows if it's just a "Microsoft has decided to boggle your mind yet again" error?.. What I would do in this situation is to take the 8GB drive to a friends computer and try it there.. Preferably a win98 machine.. Just to make sure that the data is actually there before you start...
