    **RESOLVED**(sort of)-xp client cannot join 2000 server

Did you have a compelling reason to upgrade from Windows 98 to XP, instead of a clean install? I've often run into funny errors when doing an upgrade install like that....

Internal vs. External laptop WiFi cards

This isn't always true. There are many notebooks that have known issues with the signal strength on their built-in cards. Some Alienware notebooks were notorious for this. If you're interested in a PCMCIA card with a port for an external antenna, look into Orinoco gold cards. Some require a...

    setting up frontend backend firewall

Good luck with ISA 2000. I've had more problems with it than I can count. Stupid problems too. My rules would randomly dissappear, then magically reappear upon restarting the services. If you encounter the bug that won't allow HTTP traffic to someone logged into the console on the ISA server...

    monitor LAN activity?

Plug the DSL modem into the hub via the uplink port, and plug the rest of the computers into the other ports. Once this is done, the switch should be totally out of the picture, and everone should be connected.

    ip networking ftp

You have a linksys router, and another router? If you have two networking devices like that, then you'll just need to forward the ports through both. Can you give a little more detail about your setup?

    ip networking ftp

You'll need to go into your router's settings and forward port 21 (for FTP) and port 23 (for telnet) to that machine. SSH would be port 22, in case you need that as well.

New setup, can't get my network adapter to work...

This article has good steps detailing how to make sure the NIC is completely uninstalled.

New setup, can't get my network adapter to work...

Have you tried completely uninstalling that device and reinstalling it? That error message usually has to do with driver names being the same. If you've installed it more than once (sounds like you have) this could be what's happening.

Win 98 very slow to boot up

Windows ME was able to simulate a fast boot by displaying the desktop before all the system components were actually loaded. So, you get to the ME desktop faster, but it still takes a minute after the desktop appears for the system to become fully useable.

    Auto shut-down

That's pretty hot for a cold boot. It really shouldn't be that high. If you're starting off from a cold machine, and it's already 50-60C after booting, your processor is probably rebooting because it's thermal protection is getting tripped. If you can get ASUS Probe running, watch it while...

Explain to me what I did ...

I've also had some problems with the latest Catalyst drivers and my 9600XT. Do you have overdrive enabled? This caused a lot of random reboots on my gaming box. By changing that setting, you haven't disabled your graphics card. You still have your monitor plugged into, right? So it's not...

    Strange CAT5 Wire Problem

Have you tried connecting another Cat5 cable to your new PC? What happens then? It seems pretty unlikely that there's a problem with the cable. Have you run a full virus scan on this computer? This activity could be due to a virus spamming out your network connnections.

Problem with local ISP LAN @ college

When you turn his computer off, are you then able to access the internet? If not, then it has nothing to do with his computer. Assuming they have a fairly normal setup, changing your IP to a static IP shouldn't affect other users unless it's conflicting with the AP, or a downstream router...

Cannot access a Win2000 PC on network.

Go into the control panel and check your local security policy. If you're leaving the guest account open for people to access from, make sure that's not added to "Deny access from the network". Also, if you intend to just use the guest account, make sure that's enabled. Finally, make sure the...
