yesterday i ran out of gillete fusion cartridges for my razor. as you know these things are fucking expensive($2 each on ebay, $4 retail) and got to thinking about a better way to shave. i have very little facial hair(only on my upper lip) and got tired of spending $$$ on this shit so i researched to see if there was a cheaper way(that also gave a better shave). so i came across a forum dedicated to wet shaving and was surprised to see 'shaving enthusiasts' on here. i never thought of shaving as a hobby. in particular this thread caught my interest

i just thought it was sort of funny how people could make shaving into a hobby but everyone has their own thing they're into...

I cut myself often shaving. So no, shaving isn't a hobby because cutting myself isn't a hobby.

I use a safety razor, gets a better shave than the cartridge type blades. Cheaper too. If you don't have tons of facial hair, it would probably be a better option. I shave in the shower, takes a bit of time but worth it IMO. Pack of blades is $10 and lasts for a couple months if you change out the blade every week.

www.classicshaving.com - get a basic safety razor and "feather" blades. Will run you about $40 initially, but should be cheaper in the long run since you just have to buy new blades.

I wouldn't really consider it a hobby. It's just the old way of getting a shave which requires more work then today's dispense the shaving gel from a can, smear on your face, then swipe 5 bladed razor across it. It takes longer but it can be relaxing and it is a much closer shave when done properly. You just have to suffer through lots of cuts as you learn how to shave with a DE or straight edge razor.

I get a pack of disposable razors for $2 and shave for months.

I just couldn't force myself to click that link at work... lol

I must be online too much if all I could think about was some sort of extremely nsfw fetish porn trick link... or maybe I just found my new fetish??

do what i do, just shave once every couple of weeks and use razors till they rip your hair out. or just buy an electric razor and be done with it

Once I switched a DE razor, mixing up a lather mix with a brush/shaving soap, using an alum block post-shave, etc. I've never even imagined going back to a disposable/electric razor. I wouldn't exactly use the word hobby, but I really enjoy shaving now. Yes, it takes longer, but there's something satisfying about a classic wet shave. I actually enjoy it quite a bit.

I think there's some confusion on the OP's part. First of all, anything can be a hobby. If you think people discussing shaving is silly, you might be surprised there aer forums where people talk about *gasp* weightlifting, or car repair, or cooking. And why wouldn't there be? I don't think they think of it as a hobby the way building model airplanes is a hobby. They are just enthusiasts interested in getting a quality shave. And while you might think that's weird, people like them need to exist so when the average Joe, like you, asks the question "What's the best badger brush I can buy for under $50?" someone will have an answer.
