ZZZAPP! Help! Blown power supply!

Help! I just plugged in the new system I'm putting together and Kablooie! The power supply went zap, I saw sparks flashing inside it, and smoke started to come out as I quickly unplugged it.

The thing is, it shouldn't have even turned itself on yet. It was plugged into the motherboard, and some drives and fans but the motherboard wasn't connected to the case power switch yet. I just plugged in the power cable to a power strip surge protector, and when I turned the power strip on, kaboom! One dead Antec 400W PS.

So, I'm not sure how to handle this. All the parts in the system are brand new, so nothing is known to be good for sure.

My RMA periods with my vendors expires very soon, so I need to handle this very quickly. This is a VERY expensive system, and I can't afford to replace a bunch of dead parts... AXP 1800+, Antec SX1040 case, Epox 8kha+, GF3 Ti500, 512MB Corsair PC2400, etc.

I need to figure out exactly which parts are still good or not. Is it likely that the PS would have fried all the components connected to it?

I have another system I can try the parts in, but I'm afraid I'll destroy THAT power supply as well if I plug in a bad component; especially the motherboard.

What do you think - was this just a bad PS, or could it have been the motherboard somehow shorting things out? Do I dare try the components from the dead system in my working system?

I need some advice, quick! Help!

Edit: fixed some typos

I would say that your ps was the bad component. I would first just try to replace the PS. Plug that into your rig just as you would normally. Then see how things go from there.
