Would it be possible to be able to double click on a word (marking it) and then click for bold, italics, http or whatever? As it is now you have to either use the style buttons while you're writing your message or do it afterwards (for instance replace a word you want to have in bold). I know it is a minor thing , but still.

Not really something you can do cross browser and make sure it works. THe editor is as far as we will go until some of the other browsers get up to snuff.
