Subject pretty much says it all. I've googled and found plenty of things that will help me convert movie files but I'm having trouble finding a (preferably free) program that will let me go straight from DVD to the Zune. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated!

Try FairUse Wizard, I think that's still free. It will decrypt your dvd, and offers a zune profile.

+1

I've tried a few including DVDFab, but I've found Fairuse Wizard to be the best so far, best part is that it's free.

It's telling me the selected encoding requires the full version... $29.95. I don't mind paying for something if I know it will work so do you guys think this is worth it? What I mean is, should I be going for this program if I'm paying $30 or is there some better solution out there for $30?

Try using Handbrake and the iPod setting. IIRC, Microsoft tried very hard to make it so that the Zune would play the same sorts of videos as the iPod. (I'm a little surprised a Zune pre-set didn't make it into the last version of Handbrake.)

If you do use Handbrake, make sure you have a recent version of VLC installed so that it'll do the DVD decryption vis libdvdcss.

Hmm I didn't know you needed to pay for the full version just to use the zune profile. Can you use the free version with user defined settings, the codec settings option from the dropdown? If so I believe you can just choose x264 for video, make sure you pick the correct audio track and 320 X 176 for video resolution.
