I don't think it's a failure, the ACR is an incredible track vehicle with huge downforce, the ZR1 is a more fit as a DD.

You know, that has to be a bit disheartening on the driver. Those laps are long and brutal to drive (although fun) and doing it 20 times and falling just short of your mark must suck. Hours and hours driving the same hellish track over and over again.

They still owned the MC-12 which claimed to be the fastest two weeks after the Viper's 7:22. :)

That's an epic good time. Yeah, the downforce on the ZR-1 just isn't there to the same level, and I'd also have to guess the tires aren't up to par either, if they're the stock runflats.

yes.
-edit- but there is a wing or front spoiler that has to removed IIRC.

Ah. I'd be willing to bet my life on the ACR not being able to put down the same 'Ring time without the downforce of the full race kit.

The middle part of the front splitter is removable so you don't damage it with speedbumps etc.

The splitter on the Viper ACR is not street legal, that's the primary reason it's removable iirc.

It's federal law regarding a splitter protruding more than the bumper, iirc.

Didn't see any mention of the tires. Considering the huge amount of time made up it wouldn't surprise me in the least if they threw some better rubber on.

They were the stock runflat Michelin PS2. They're actually reasonably good tires, for run flats. They're nowhere near the DOT-R tires the Viper ACR is shod with though.

Awesome! Thanks Apex, I continue to be impressed with the ZR-1. Looks to be one of the best all-around performance cars of all time.

Anyone know how many times they had to run the vette to get those times? I remember the viper was done in very few laps and still had a lot left, bouncing off the rev limiter and crap as he was driving.

For fun, I fired up Gran Turismo 4 and modded a Viper to as closely approximate the ACR as possible (soft street tires, adjustable suspension, 600 HP, upgraded clutch, some downforce). It took me maybe 10 laps or so, but I got it down to 7:24, and it could go lower with a better player. Obviously one can take risks in a video game that you can't in a real car, but I made a few mistakes that cost time, too. There are always going to be inconsistencies in track and car modeling, but I thought it was pretty amazing how close the results were. If you attack the 'ring in a 600 HP Viper with downforce, you get low 7:20's, whether in real life or the game.

GT4 is such a great game. :) Depending on what kind of features GT5 has, I may actually buy a PS3 and HDTV solely for it. Also, I'm very curious what a ZR1 would be able to do just with an adjustable spoiler.

The guy driving the ACR had never driven one before, the guy for corvette is their Lemans driver and also holds the record in the Z06.

Um, no. The Viper guy is a professional race car driver who drove modified Vipers in 24-hour Nurburgring endurance races. Yes, he never drove that particular trim level, but you'd still be hard pressed to find someone who knows how to hussle a Viper around that particular track better.

That's not to take away from the Viper at all, but the driver was cherry-picked, not just a random driver.
