Hi. I recently upgraded my computer with a Zotac Nvidia GTS 450.

The card worked fine when I first booted my computer up but after I installed drivers (yes I have tryed all the old drivers/beta drivers/disc drivers) I rebooted my computer to complete the install and on startup I got a BSOD and my computer restarted.

The only way I could use my computer was to boot in safe mode and roll back the drivers, I have tryed using driversweeper to get rid of registry settings for my previous graphics card (8600 GTS) that unfortunately did not make a difference, so I reinstalled windows and wiped my hardrive clean, that also didn't work.

I think I need a faster PCI-Express slot to run the graphics card, but I'm not entirely sure, and I would appreciate your opinions on what I should do next.

Below are the specs from my current computer:

CPU = Intel Pentium Dual Core E5400 2.7GHz
Motherboard = ASRock 4CoreDual-SATA2
RAM = 2x 1024mb DDR2 Dram frequency of 266.0 MHz
GPU = Nvidia Geforce 8600 GTS 256mb
PSU = Arctic Power 700W PSU

PCIe is backward compatible.

Have you updated the VIA 4in1 drivers?
http://www.via.com.tw/en/support/drivers.jsp

Newwest BIOs? 2.20 is the last one for thast board. The 2.20 had a lot of PCIe video card fixs to it.
http://www.asrock.com/mb/download.asp?Model=4CoreDual-SATA2&o=BIOS

Also go into the Bios and turned off the AGP port and set the PCIe as the primary port?

Was your old card a AGP card? This chipset PT880 is very picky with PCIe video cards. If you have the newwest drivers, newwest Bios, and the reinstall did not work then this card may be to new for this chipset.

I have a GTS450 in my older 775 system but it is a native PCIe board, no AGP.

Yep, I updated the 4in1 drivers, updated the Bios to 2.20 and set the PCIe as the primary port in the bios, made no difference.

And no my old card was the Nvidia GeForce 8600 GTS that I'm using now, I think you may be right about the chipset, I kinda assumed that any PCIe graphics card would work in any motherboard that has a PCIe slot, I don't really know much about this :p

However in the BSOD it mentions a file called Nv4_disp and says that it has entered an infinite loop causing it to crash, then it tells me that this is Driver or Hardware error.

So mabye the graphics card itself is broken, I might return it for a replacement one soon if I can't get it working.

And thanks for suggestions :)

Yea the GTS450 is a newwer FERMI chip base with PCIe 2.0. The 8600 is the older G based chip design, that and also PCIe1.0 if i remember correct.

So yea maybe a bad card but that is pretty rare. You are going the right path though so can;t fault what you have done.

Also I think there are aftermarkt BIOs for that board. Search to see if anybody else has been able to get a FERMI based card to work in the PT880. The video drivers have to work with the chipset so could be they just will never play well with it?
