hi all.
so i have these two available to me to choose from.
Asus is 10% costlier than the zotac's version. also, doesn't come with ubi game o_O.
i want 1 gpu set up to play games on my 780p 60hz plasma with high or ultra settings.
for rest of the parts i have
asus rog rampage vi gene mobo
i7 4790k cpu with H90 cpu cooler
8 gb(2x4) 1600hz vengenace RAM
bitfenix phenom :wub:case.
evga 780 classified( going to a new home today):(

i am weak at heart so overclocking is not my thing. i tried my hand at it with my 780 & it didn't go well :p
so, i would like good base clock out of the box. (zotac)
but i also need reliability so, anyone who has used zotac's cards, can you please share your experience/s? also, if someone unfortunately had to go through RMA with them can you please share your experience/s too?

I can't say for the 980.
But I recently purchased a semi-modern Zotac card and was quite impressed with the quality.
The VRMs and RAM were sinked separately from the core, with good thermal tape and screwed-down sinks.
Let me go look @ the Asus card..ehh..It's reference..so idk.
Do some research on the Asus card. :D
edit: Here's how a 760 non-ref looks with sink off:
I'd say Zotac.

I was quite happy with Zotac for the 600 series. Still use the GTX680 in GFs gaming comp. This time around I went EVGA GTX980 SC blower. But thats mainly due to limited selection on day one.

However I would never buy Asus.

Omega is too gimmicky for me, dual slot cards that get the same job done. MSI Gaming just came back in stock at the Egg, not sure how long.

@schmuckley Asus one is not reference. It has their dual fan after market cooler. Were you referring to clock speeds?

@shintaiDK I have heard above average-great reviews about zotac (better than gigabyte o_O) but not sure about their quality control. Also, there is a vid review on YouTube bashing this card for not being able to overclock extremely high as promised. But he doesn't say any thing about the card under normal use. :/

Hauk I know it very big too. But I think the heat sink is an overkill and I like it that way.

I am planning to buy these cards from a non-us location. They are costlier there but get 5 year warranty (still to confirm for Asus). I will leave US in November and might not come back for a year so, I am not looking to buy from America..

Yesterday, by the time my card was charged, it was already OOS, again, if that's any indication.

What he's saying is that you actually won't have much choice when it comes to 980 models. Good luck finding a Strix anywhere.

Edit: The similar MSI Gaming model is actually currently in stock at Newegg, but probably won't be for long.

i am not looking to buy in the US. i will buy from india. and both are available in good quantities and with many vendors. problem is its very costly but that's not a big factor cosidering they offer longer (3 yrs for unregistered+2 for registered) warranty period. Also, RMA's are very fast. being neighbors with china has its benefits after all.
also, these cards don't loose value so quickly so second hand market recovers a lot of cost.

charged: Newegg sends a confirmation once they confirm the card servicer is willing to grant them claim to your money.
OOS = out of stock.

I saw it in stock, added it to cart, and put the order through. I got two charges, so I went to check right away and make sure I didn't do anything stupid like accidentally order two, or order something else left in the cart unintentionally. It was the promo game code, though, no all was well. But, by the time I figured that out, merely minutes after my order, the product page was showing out of stock, already. I'd have missed it completely if I didn't have auto-notify set for multiple models at NE and Amazon.

P.S. I was getting the 970, not the 980, but the 980 are going OOS a lot, too.

OK, that's helpful.

I would not pay 10% more for any GTX 980. They all perform quite similarly.

But these are better than reference blower type card, right?

For gtx 980 aftermarket versions I have 3 options only. Asus strix costliest, zotac amp omega(2nd highest don't know why) and zotac amp omega extreme lowest cost (but highest base clock. But zotac is Macau based company. Quality control of American /British /European companies are really good, not sure about Chinese company. That's why I was asking previous zotac owners for their experiences.

780p gaming at 60Hz and you want to waste money on a 980? No way. Get a GTX970 or R9 290 at most. Honestly even cards like R9 280 or 760 are good enough. I mean seriously the difference between a 970/290 and 980 at your resolution and 60Hz limit will be 0!

:( I will be buying a 4k res tv in next 6-8 months. I bought 780 classified on ur recommendation. It was good but the way it was loosing value after the launch of Maxwell I decided to sell it. Instead of buying all 4k goodies once n rip my wallet, I thought I would buy the card now and will buy 4k tv when prices are reasonable. Carrying a card from US or india is easier for me than carrying a tv . ;)

Not exactly. Assassins Creed Black Flag can't run maxed out at 1200p on a 780Ti even with AA turned down at a solid 60FPS. Same with Crysis 3 or Metro LL. Even at Full HD, the more you turn up the settings the more you'll want a high(er) end card.

In that case its more important for me to get a max performing (contemporary scenario) gpu. Other wise I already have an average performing system called ps4 lol.

If I have to deal with multiple %#!¥ softwares(uplay, origin, steam etc etc) while having average performing system then I am ok with terrible ps4 software :p

If you won't OC get best factory OCed and I can vouch for zotac gtx 980 amp extreme Edition as I have it. It actually boosts to 1418MHz which is higher than advertised. It stays at 67 degrees Celsius at load. What more could you ask? :) currently Firestorm has some glitches with OC+ feature of the card. You connect a separate chip to MB s USB header that way you can constantly monitor hardware right now monitoring has no problems but for OC over voting is glitchy. However if you push OC with no over volting it also can OC well actually but less than you can get with over volt. Zotac is all over the matter and updated software 6 times since release :) so they are constantly working on it. Buy this one for sure.

Thanks for the confidence boost lol

Asus strix is sold by amazon.in & they have managed to earn pretty darn bad repo in India in a very little time.

I will go for zotac amp extreme

also, do u mind if I pm you for further queries?

I don't think you read the OP or my post. His plasma is 780p, but I think he meant 768p (1366x768). This is a very low resolution and a far cry from FullHD or miles behind 1200p. There will be 0 difference in games between a 970 and 980.

Secondly, since the OP wants to buy a 4K monitor, I would never recommend a single 980. Instead he should consider dual 970s or dual 290s. No single GPU is powerful enough for 4K games.

Apparently most people in this thread aren't even reading the details.

 sooooooo.....!!! i should not buy a 4k tv? cuz this (or 970 version) is very big and i don't think my mobo can handle 2 of them together. only choice left would be remove the fan/heatsink and install water blocks. :/
