Well, I just built a system for my friend an I noticed that the card runs pretty warm in comparison to my Palit 9600gt Sonic Edition. His idles around 50*C mine sits in the 30's. I know it's a single slot cooler but would it make that much of a difference. We both have a 120mm fan on the 2 cards in SLI...

I know it's overclocked, but is that normal running temp for a single slot cooler?

Its not all that hot. GPUS tend to run hotter and his 8800GT is a more powerful GPU then your 9600. Yes your 9600 is a newer card but the 8800GT out performs yours. GPUs are able to take allot more heat then CPUs. So an idel of 50c isn't all that bad.

Yeah, I knew it was more powerful, but didn't think that it would make that much heat. I just like seeing low numbers. My FX card doesn't see anymore than 45*C underload. It was seeing 67*C at one point... but it was probably at least like 90*C in the room... haha

Thanks, I just wasn't sure what the norm was for the 8800GT.

And what exactly is the reason for the lower temps on my card... or the 9600 anyway? Sorry for the noob question...

The 9600 GT is an updated core and has fewer stream processors. Also, your 9600 GT may be downclocking itself under idle... not too sure if that particular GPU does it but I know Nvidia is going (back) towards doing that and have implemented it in the new GTX 2xx cards.

Idling around 50ºC is not bad for an 8800 GT that is highly overclocked using a reference single-slot cooler.

Oh yeah, and I highly doubt that it was 90ºC in the room... you guys would be dead.

Sorry I meant 90*F haha

But, my 9600gt does not under clock at idle... Checked it with riva tuner and some other apps. Mine is how ever an over clocked edition as well... I do like my idle temps and even load temps, nothing above 45ish *C
