Zoom with mouse

I just got a mac a week ago. I still cannot figure out how to zoom in programs. For instance in Inkscape(photoshop like program) or anything other similar programs. I am used to holding down control and scrolling up or down to zoom in and out. I have gotten used to scrolling side ways without having to hold shift(that is a nice feature.

When I hold down control and scroll, it zooms the entire screen, instead of the workspace. Is it possible to zoom in just the workspace without having to hit "+" whenever I want to zoom?

I have a magic bluetooth mouse, and I also tried a regular windows mouse. Neither worked. I also tried command, option, fn, and shift. No go.

TIA

Google for BetterTouchTool and install it, then configure zooming as a gesture or key combination.

I think you'll find it extremely useful if anything.

In Photoshop, hold down Z, click and then move the mouse left or right.

A general gesture that will work in all? You'll have to use something like BetterTouchTool as runawayprisoner said.

Thanks for the replies, I will try those when I get home. So with BTT, I can set it to only zoom inside the project page?
