Ok , just got my new computer setup lastnight but still having modem connection speed issues .

Zoom modem Mdl- 3025C

I downloaded the latest drivers from thier website but I still connect at aweful 33.2 speeds . I used to connect at 46.6 -51.9 on the same line with my other computer , so I know it's not a line issue , I do remember connecting at 48K lastnight ONCE , but have yet to see that speed again . I even tried the INIT String commands they tell you to use if you have problem , but none of them increased my speed & I just set back to normal .

Win 2000SP3 (SP4 in the mail)
Intel 865Perl MB/Intel 2.66-533 cpu
Mushkin 2700ddr/256mb X2
PNY 5600Ultra 400/400
Maxtor 80gb

Can anyone help me ?

How long have you had the modem for?

I have a computer with a 56k software modem that only ever gets 35k or so, whereas other computers on the same lines get 45k/50k, it may just be a poor modem.

If it was really cheap, then its quite likely a software modem and probably won't get anywhere near 56k, I would say take it back and try another modem made by another company and see if that works any better, my guess is it will.

keep in mind that the connection speed varies at different time. for exmaple im now hooked @ 46.6K, while last week one night i got 28.8K on the same connection. the modem is one that my bro got for $10AR at staples/OMax

try a couple of times more and good luck

I have never hit 50K with Zooms, while USR's have done 50K+ for me but keep it mind it also has a lot to do with the phone lines that are used.

ask if someone messed around with your lines.

I used to get 49 kbs consistently until they decided to upgrade our old lines and it dropped down my connection speed to 26kbs.

I had them come back 3 x unitil they where able to move me to a line thats was better I am now getting 40 kbs not as good but they ony guarantee 26 kbs.
Dont tell them about only getting 33 kbs tell them you are getting dropped connections ,line noises dropped faxes they may not do any thing if you tell them your only getting 33 kbs

if you are getting good connection with another computer same line then it probably is the modem software. I usually let xp install the driver for me.

good luck

Once again guys ;)

I know connection speeds vary at diff times but my old computer NEVER went below 46K .
No one has messed with my lines as I just built this computer lastnight & was on the internet at 50.6K with old computer before hand , downloading the files I needed for this New computer :)

I suppose I'll try an $70.-80. US Robotics modem . I did get this thing for $20. after $20. mail in rebate .

I use an el-cheapo softmodem that came with my eMachines that I bought in late 2000 and it connects at 45-50k all the time (~5.5 to 6.5 kb/s downloads), so I don't know what the problem is if you just bought a new V92.

try checking the defaults in the modem; it may be limiting your access rate. You can manually select the highest rate you want and some people will select a speed that's below the max. rate, just to enhance clear data and have less chance of data fallout

If I connected via modem, I'd dump the cheap, software based ones and pay extra for a good USR modem or something equivalent.

By the way, we had a Zoom modem that had the same problem you had awhile back (1-2 years now). We eventually just dumped it for another one and the speed returned.

Ok , I did a little digging online & finally fixed my slow connection problem . I entered #1. below & now connect at no lower than 48k but most of the time connect at 49.2k . Took a look at the online manual & it shows INIT strings you can add for this modem -----Zoom modem Mdl- 3025C

1 . If your ISP does not support V.92 & your connection seems low , this string disables V.92 ---- AT+MS=V90,0
2 . ISP supports V.92 , this Disables V.90 ---- AT+MS=V92,0

Connection speed depends on two things in general:

1) Line Quality

2) Modem compatibility with your ISP

Basically phone line quality is an easy one you normally have a good line or you dont. Your telephone company can change settings on the line but this rarely has any effect, the only way to improve this way is to try and get a different line from your exchange, however this could go the other way and you could end up with a poor line. Telephone companies only guarantee lines for basic speeds (28.8 at most usually, some only 9.6).

Modem compatibility can make quite a difference, basically you need a modem chipset which suits what modems your ISP are running on their racks. Usually there isnt much difference between 2-5kbps etc, but in some cases it can be quite a lot and some wont even connect to an ISP. Also some cheaper V.92 modems seem to have a hard time switching to V.90 and end up connecting at V.34 (as above) or not at all.
