Just using the default settings, pretty much. Yet when browsing the web, it either slows me to a crawl, or times out when trying to view a site. Also, I keep getting the following alert over and over, although the Port# keeps changing.

The firewall has blocked Internet access to your computer (TCP Port 6699) from 24.79.57.249 (TCP Port 4286) [TCP Flags: S].

just check the box that says "dont bother me" and continue surfing.

as for the speed slowdown.. ihave noticed it .. but its marginal for what it does. You got to realise it does check your incoming and outgoing packets..

i am not sure if it does stateful packet inspections, if it does that would explain the slowdown.

The slowdown is the least of it, at least half the time pages do not even load. If I want to refresh the page here at AnandTech, I have to shut it off. :(

In the last few hours, that IP address has come up on the alerts dozens of times. This one has as well: 217.56.78.70

well, do you know what it is? unless it's your isp or something safe, i wouldn't be rushing to close zonealarm...

I'm pretty sure 24.79.57.249 is your isp. I'm on comcast and it's very silmilar to the one they use to scan me. That's normal, they use it to cheack for servers on the network. You are on your own with the other one though.

Are your virus defs up to date? You may also want to try an online scanner, There is one for worms that's pretty good. I forget what it's called though.

netstat -an

Look for something along the lines of "*.6699" If you see something like that double check your anti-virus definitions.

The new version 3 did that to me too, got rid of it after 15mins... it's horrible and worse in every possible way than the previous version :(

First things first, make sure you have the latest version. It fixed alot of bugs and incompabilities.

If a site is stubborn and won't load correctly (postings in fusetalk forums) just add that to Privacy > Site List and from there, just add the site to it. Right click, go to options, and go to the ad blocking tab. Uncheck all the options and save. If you're not a subscriber, you might opt to keep the animation box checked so ads don't annoy you.

Just downloaded the newest version yesterday, but I will try adjusting it in the manner which you describe.
