i've been using zonelarm for a while now (free!) but just got a copy of norton internet security. so i was wondering if i should stick with zonealarm or switch to norton. my biggest concern is whether norton is a memory hog or not:) and what advantages am i getting if i go with norton.

I've played around with both. Norton does offer a lot more options and manageability than Zonealarm, and in return it hogs more memory. They pretty much do the same things.

I would recommend sticking with ZoneAlarm. Norton requires a lot of configuring in order to work properly, but does not offer any real advantages over ZoneAlarm. ZA is much more simpler and does the job.

I would go for norton. Using zone alarms installs Aureate (Aureate bad) look on http://www.grc.com for Optout for more info on what Aureate does and how to remove it.

wake, you are not correct. Steve Gibson (grc.com is his site) uses ZoneAlarm himself. I suggest that you read up under the firewall section of his site. There is no Aureate "spyware" in ZoneAlarm. I have been using ZA since it first came out, and it does exactly what it is designed to do, and does it well.

Quoted from Steve Gibson of GRC:

"I am using it right now ? and NOTHING ELSE! ? on my personal system, and so far I love it! I think ZA combines the best of ALL worlds and eclipses every other firewall ever created. I hope to review it soon, but I will wait until the product stabilizes so I can give it my full endorsement without reservations."

"ZoneAlarm 2.0 was released by ZoneLabs on January 26th, 2000.

Nearly six months later ? I am writing this on July 12th, 2000 ? this remarkable, and completely free (for personal use), firewall product has become quite stable and is absolutely useful.

I can, and do, now recommend, without hesitation, that you give it a try."

Oops. You're right!
Someone was telling me that zonealarms contained aureate.
Thanks for clearing that up!

zonealarm is not a true firewall program.

NIS is based on atguard (since symantec bought it), and is much more than a firewall program. it is also an ad blocker. and a cookie management program. atguard is highly customizable, and preset parameters can be used for newbies.

atguard is not exactly a HOG, but you should have enough resources for it.
