ZoneAlarm causes my Win2K system to freeze up 10-15 minutes after I connect to the internet. I have it setup the way it is recommended in the FAQs and online documentation from zonelabs. Any body have a similar experience or any suggestions?
Thanks

You mean it freezes to the point you need to do a hard reboot? This is a problem on some Win98/WinMe PC's but have never see this happen on a Win2K system :(

If anything will cause your problem it will be the "True Vector Service" that is part of Z/A. This is the #1 reasons for lock ups on Win98/WinMe machines.

BTW: It sounds like your Win2K is FAT32, and not NTFS. Right?

When you reply, give us complete details of you entire system and running services

Thanks for your reply. Yes I have to do a hard reset. Actually I also have ZA running on the WinME partition of the same PC without any apparent problems, but I very rarely boot into it so that's why I may not have noticed it. I used to run Win2K in a NTFS partition with the same problem. Right now it's running on FAT32. Isn't the 'True Vector Service' the main reason for ZA's security?
Here's my system details:

Duron 700@900/KT7/256MB PC133/30G WDC
Voodoo Banshee
SBLive Platinum
Kingston PCI NIC
HCF 56K PCI modem

If you want to crash ZoneAlarm on Win2K, play with EJB and Cloudscape. I can get it to crash EVERY time. In fact, I don't know how to not make it crash, so I have to shut it down first!

What really bothers me is the fact that it locks up 10 to 15 minutes after you go online.

Is it like clockwork?

Do you have any "Scheduled Tasks?"

What to try
1) Disable your "Power Managenent."
2) Run your CPU at 700mhz (do not overclock - for testing)
3) Read the "Error Logs" and paste them here.
4) Check for virus and trojans.

I wouldn't say it's like clockwork, but it happens between 10-30 minutes after I log on. I have dial-up access to the 'net and use ICS to let my kids system (WinMe) get to the internet. I also usually have multiple IE windows open. I have power management(and ACPI) disabled. I have run the CPU at default speed for many days with the same result. Without ZA (I have Black Ice installed now), and at 900Mhz, I haven't rebooted for more than 2 weeks untill earlier today after I installed an application. I don't have any scheduled tasks, but I leave my system on all the time. I also have Norton Antivirus 2001 installed with all the latest updates. Which logs do you want to see?

Are you using the most current version.. and did you have a version on your PC before?

I had problems and what I did was delete EVERY file ZA ever put on my PC.. delete EVERY registry entry.

Zonelabs is VERY good about this and actually has a page in their support section that lists every registry entry and file they put on your PC (how many companies can say that). Once I did that, rebooted, reinstalled, no problems.

Yes I have the latest version - downloaded it only a week ago. I have installed it on a freshly installed copy of Windows with nothing but Norton Antivirus 2001 with the same results.

<< Which logs do you want to see? >>

Hey surd615... Sorry for answering late :)

The "logs" can be found under: START>SETTINGS>CONTROL PANEL>ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS>EVENT VIEWER. Look under "application logs" and "system logs."

If you find an error, read the properties (description).

Here is the link to uninstall Z/A like Shudder mentioned. It's worth a shot.

BTW: Not that I recommend you giving up on this :) But you may consider Tiny Firewall as an alternative. It's also free and works quite well. It's better in some areas, while lacking in others.
