ZoneAlarm and Network question

Does ZoneAlarm have to be installed on each machine on a network with shared internet? Their website says you should install on each box. However, I have a laptop connected to the internet through a desktop running ZA and connected to the internet. I have run several security checks from the laptop (with no ZA) and nothing gets through. It is stopped by the host machine running ZA.

Is there something I'm missing? Do you really have to run ZA on every machine or just the host connected to the internet?

Thx

Run different firewalls on each system. This way you have experience with multiple products AND any cracker has to figure out how to get around several different defenses 🙂

I am running cable through a box with Winproxy to the other boxes.

As far as running different firewalls on each machine, not a bad idea but this is something I want safe but simple. Don't really want to play with this one.

Then use whatever firewall you trust on EVERY machine 🙂If they do find a way around the firewall atleast they have to do it multiple times 🙂

sorry if this may be off topic, but i'm also running zone alarm on 3 computers connected through a netgear 4 port dsl/cable router (rt314)...but i'm having trouble sharing files/printer. is there anything special i need to do? i put the security for local on low, and all have the same workgroup name, but i can't ping or see anyone. any ideas or suggestions? thanks.

To test if it's ZA, disable it on all the machines and see if you can ping around between machines.

Make sure ZA allows everything from the local LAN address (1.2.3.x). Your firewall installations are probably filtering all the traffic coming to the ports used for Windows filesharing, LanMan broadcasts, etc.

Add the adapter for the network to the local network (zone):

Security > Advanced, then add the right adapter to the local zone.
