ZoneAlarm and Explorer

I have zonealarm set up to run on startup...the weird thing is, zonealarm asks me if i want to allow windows (windows, not internet!) explorer to access the internet. I always click no, but it's beginning to bug me.

Anyone else have this problem, or is it just me? I'm running Windows ME
Any suggestions?
thanks!

When I was running Win2k with Norton Internet Security 2k1, I got a similar message, asking whether I wanted to allow "System" to access the internet. This confused me as well. Has anyone heard of this before? Do you think the OS is trying to contact an MS site?

Sorry sammykun that I couldn't help...

Yeah, I had that...

What you have to do is to have Zone Alarm prohibit it from accessing the 'Net (if you're paranoid).

Open the Zone Alarm applet and access Programs.

Find the Windows Explorer (Explorer.exe) and X-it.

well, just plain blocking it is what i'd like to do...but i was just wondering why windows explorer would want to access the internet, anyways. any ideas it would want to do that?

It's nothing to worry about...

If you open IE and enter a URL, it works fine right? But if you open, say... My Computer and type in a URL, this gives you the ZA pop up.... right?

What is happening is you are going from the Windows Explorer to the net, and not Internet Explorer. You are simply going from one shell to another in one step, and ZA notices it's 2 seperate programs.

well, that's the thing...i dont' use windows explorer at all.
it just asks that thing after windows starts up, and zonealarm kicks in. i could just ignore it, but i was wondering if it was just me that was getting that popup.

thanks for your help, everyone! 🙂

no its not just you. i opened up MY COMPUTER and not specifically WINDOWS EXPLORER and i received the message. i just let it access the internet. i dont care too much.

If it happens without you entering an internet address, I would check a few things....

1) Disable the "Windows critical auto-update" notice.

2) Update your anti-virus program and run it.

3) Check for spy-ware.

4) Pay attention to any software that you recently installed.

Don't simply ignore this, it could be something innocent or maybe a program calling home.

--Good luck
