ZoneAlarm Pro is far the best but they will tell you they are too bloated or will slow your pc down but with my pc I don't see any slowdown at all because I have a faster CPU.
Now I need to find out more about Comodo Firewall Pro 3.0 for my notebook.

by far the best by which criteria?
Firewall effectiveness? Nope
System resources? Not anymore I understand....
User Interface and ease of use? Undoutably IMO

I used ZAPro 5.5 and it was/is fab: effective, lightweight.
I installed ZAPro 7 and brought my 4gb/q6600 quad core machine to its knees.
Version 6.x were all horrendous causing crashes left right and centre.

I plan to move to Comodo but find it a little intimidating with the need for all the rules creation.

Online Armor's free version (it even has HIPS) is getting top marks right along with Comodo 3.0 for protection. OA is just about to release a newer version that will work with Vista.

At least in terms of leak tests the paid version of ZA is fairly good but not best. The free version of ZA rates very poorly.

From somewhat older leak tests that dated enough to not include comodo version three, the top two rated firewalls were the Agnethium paid and the on line armor free. But on line armor free and comodo free version three are both bring out new versions and revisions at a rapid pace.

The some what radical departure adopted by both online armor and comodo versions 3.0 and greater is in combining an excellent almost leakproof firewall with HIPS and process control functions. That plus whitelists end up making both firewalls almost self configuring on most computer systems. But I do expect that will be the firewall trend of the future as other companies play me too. And with the plethora of new versions coming out, it will likely be a long time before unbiased third party testing sites can be up to speed on comparative versions as new versions come out faster than they can be tested.

How about the Windows built-in firewall? Effective and much less bloat. ;)

That's my first choice for XP and Vista. In addition to working well, it has the easiest install of any firewall out there(short of disconnecting your ethernet cable :^P)
