Zone Alarm or Kerio firewall

pontifex

Lifer
I used to use Zone Alarm and found it pretty easy to use but then I started to have problems that I thought was caused by Zone Alarm so I bought Kerio instead. I later found out that it wasn't Zone Alarm that was causing the problem.

I just read the new PC Magazine and they reviewed the newest ZA version and say its the best firewall out there.

Kerio confuses me sometimes with its settings. ZA was easy to figure out and use.

So which one should I use?

I've been using Zone Alarm for years and I really like it. The free version is great, plus it provides access control.

But you may want to post this over in the Software forum before you get flamed 😉

Happens to me allll the time 🙂

Anyway, I'm a big fan of ZoneAlarm. It's easy to use and I really like the program access control feature is has. Plus it's easy to teach to computer newbies. McAfee and Norton can be the biggest headaches for your average computer user, with all the popups, menus, etc. ZoneAlarm is simple and straightforward.

no problemo. i use ZA Internet Security Suit and i love it. hasn't caused me any problems plus i love the new "game mode" in version 6.5 that basically just halts all schedualed scans and let's you choose whether to allow or block any alerts. i have had this for over a year and haven't had on virus/spyware problem.

Ooh, that's a slick feature! I use AVG for my anti-virus in conjunction with ZoneAlarm for the firewall. Very low-resource app, unlike McAfee or Norton. Plus, both are free 🙂

That's like saying why use Firefox or Opera when XP comes with Internet Explorer. While it may be a decent browser, in comparison to others, it sucks.

because xp's firewall isn't very good or isan't as good as other firewall software.

XP's firewall is pretty good, but ZoneAlarm updates on a regular basis (not sure of XP's), plus it has program access control, so you can block or allow Internet access for specific programs.

I respond in kind. It makes things more interesting.

Carry on.

EDIT: Oh, and in regards to you having a mod move it, this is all you said.

i thought that all a firewall had to do was block stuff. blocking ports is basically the same as plugging a hole, right?

I rip into people in good fun. Just assume that if it's unprovoked, then I'm just bored and having some fun at someone elses expense.

I haven't used a firewall in months to years. I had Kaspersky on my comp at home, AVG here, gonna put Kaspersky on it though once I get around to buying a fresh license. Once I lock down the comp enough though, I don't worry about a firewall.

Does it? Why would you want to update a firewall? Do these updates change the rules?

You need to keep your software patched of course, but firewall software is very simple, just a few network API calls and an interface. Any bug found in the Windows firewall would most likely be bug in the Windows TCP/IP implimentation, which would affect all firewall programs.

plus it has program access control, so you can block or allow Internet access for specific programs.

Control Panel --> Security Center --> Manage security setting for: Windows Firewall --> Exceptions.

The 'Advanced' tab also has some useful settings.

I really love reading how people think they are so l33t for NOT using Windows Firewall. Give me a break. Please, I'd love to hear two good reasons why ZA or Kerio is better than XP's firewall. A :cookie: to anyone who impresses me.

XP passes Shields Up What more do you need?

Well, I've never used Windows Firewall, but can you set it up to allow/block specific services (http, FTP, etc...)? I know you can block specific programs and such. Programs like Kerio are highly customizable in allowing you to control programs, services, and even specific users and computers on a network. For example, you could allow all FTP traffic across a VPN to come through, but block all FTP traffic that is not coming in via VPN. It also lets you do things like set bandwidth limits on users and computers.

Here's a good picture from their site showing what I'm talking about: Link
