i just put the free version of zone alarm fire wall on my friends computer and was wondering if it was better or worse than the fire wall in windows.

all i know about the windows fire wall is that it blocks incoming stuff but not out going stuff (like if you have a trojan already on your computer and its sending out info)

I used ZA and found it useful. So much so, I went with Pro (hey, they can use the $25). Norton is good, too, and some around here swear by Tiny. FWIW.

The free ZA is pretty decent, IMO, and I think it's better than the windows firewall too. I reccomend that one to most people before I reccomend the XP one, if for no other reason than I don't really trust the M$ one... Don't get me wrong, I haven't had any problems with it, but something about it just worries me for some reason.

that fact that there are no settings AT ALL, and it warns you about nothing, and you still get a lot of spyware through, might be it

also my teacher was saying it only protects against incoming things not outgoing info like from a trojan or keylogger that you might have on your computer

edit: (windows fire wall)

I use the free version of it and haven't had any problems with it. I'm directly connected to the internet through a cable modem (no inbetween router) and I've never been breached.

As for zone alarm protecting against outgoing programs, it does do that in that every time a program tries to go out, it'll pop up a message asking you whether to allow it do so and if so, asks if you want to add it to a list of allowed programs.

For spyware, I doubt the free version does any good protecting against it as most spyware gets on your computer through IE.

I love ZA. I'm even considering going pro, but I think I just want the basic firewall, which is free. Best firewall out there in my opinion.
