Old news. This is an issue that has been discussed around the world for over a year. There is nothing new here. I simple web search will provide plenty of information on folks who have researched this issue very thoroughly, cleared ZA of any funny biz to date, and use the FW themselves. I could go on a great length about how a FW works and the system info it needs to do the job effectively but I see no point here. I will say this. A FW cannot...I repeat....cannot protect the system without having some knowledge about what is on the system it is protecting. How it gathers and maintains that info varies depending on the FW and how it is configured. The less user control and the more the FW needs to know. The more user control and the less the FW needs to know up front. ZA is application based with MD5 sig protection. Therefore, it needs to know more about the system in order to effectively protect that system. This is the simple explanation. If you want to discuss FW more then come over to the Security forum and lets discuss them in detail.

BTW. Quick Disclaimer. We are talking about software FWs here.

Neotechman - I'm fully aware of conseal's limitations. However I am either on a dialup connection or behind a firewall at a LAN. Either way a firewall isn't really necessary. Plus any decent virus scanner will pick up trojans etc. Besides Zonealarm's interface made me delete it in a record 1m 5secs

Results already and only THREE people sent her any info! This was on GRC (from her): "Thank you to the three people who e-mailed me with details of abnormal
vsmon DNS lookup behavior, as well as to the person who sent in a
description of normal check-for-update behavior and the person who
described a single registration attempt that was blocked by his other
firewall. Thanks to the level of detail that was provided, the
programmers were able to find the problem quickly.
A bug has been found in the code that explains the reported behavior.
The DNS lookup was put in the wrong place in the code. It is supposed
to occur only when ZA Pro detects that it needs to register. Instead,
it occurs somewhere else in the code, and ends up being called under
other circumstances, such as when ZA Pro starts up.

Thanks again to those who reported the problem, including those who
posted here but did not want to divulge information about their systems
to me via e-mail. There will be a more comprehensive bug-fix release
out soon, and I am sure this bug will be a priority for that release.

Zonealarm has a good interface. Don't know what you are talking about.

It doesn't suprise me but i'm guessing that those that use the free version of it cannot do much about it... now on the other hand those that use the Pro version and have paid for it can definetly ask for some answers.. If it is true but not mentioned anywhere in the license agreement... that ZA will be monitoring the software(+data?) and communications of a PC and reporting it to a third party... then that could be BIG trouble for ZA... very big trouble... I myself uses it and this pisses me a whole lot... :|

Zone Alarm Pro 1 didn't want to run for me but the newest downloadable demo installed fine and ran without a hitch.

That happened with service pack 1 a while ago for Windows 2000 which messed up Zone Alarm.
