Zone Alarm and Win2k Problem

My computer is connected to the university network for Internet and file access. None of the connections in the dorms are under the protection of a university firewall. So, my computer is setting here connected 24/7 wide open to attack. Great.:disgust: Knowing this I went looking for a firewall. I found ZoneAlarm and tried it. Everything works execpt I cannot map any network drives or eveny see computers in My Network Places 🙁. I need to be able to access the network because I can map a drive to my lab account. This is nice because I don't have to carry floppies or zips around. Also I cannot use VNC either. I have Win2k with Sp1 installed. I know that Zone Alarm will work because a friend of mine has it working on his ME machine and he can access the network fine.
I am also looking at getting a Netgear 314 router to act as a firewall and share my connection. This should work Ok since the connection is only 10Mb, right? Or would it give me the same problems?

Do you have the latest version of Zone Alarm? There are some issues with Win2K + SP1 with older versions of ZoneAlarm.

Yes, I have the latest version.(I think😉) Unless they they released a newer version since 10/18/00. That is when I last downloaded ZoneAlarm from thier website.

If you have the latest version it should be vers 2.1.44
ZoneAlarm 2.1.44

As Andyhui said there was a known issue with win2k sp1 and zonealarm.

I myself have the old vers of ZA and have no prob mapping any of my network drives(w/o sp1).
What happens when you try to map a drive? It doenst show up, or will it even let you map a drive?

Are you sure this is an issue with ZA? It may be a network problem.

Hope this helps

Yes, the version I have is the latest version. When my computer boots up, it automatically maps a drive to my university account. With ZoneAlarm installed I get an error saying that the resource is not available. It is the same message that one would get if the network was down or if the computer is not on.

Im not sure if its the same for the newer version but the one I have has a option that allows you to specify what applicaions are allowed to access the net. Look for some kind of Windows service and check the boxes to allow access. Have you tried this?
Sorry if you have tried this already, you didnt mention it so I figured it wouldnt hurt to ask.

edit: Its in the "programs" tab of the ZA console

Need a bit more info on how you connect to unversity network (what are they using). If it's Novell you might have to change the account you logon onto windows to be the same name as the unversity account. i haven't been able to find a way to logon under a different name yet - weird it allows me to change everything axept the name. This might also apply if you're trying to access an NT server & they are using NTLM.

In order to use VNC with any consistancy, u need to allow TCP packets from the ports that VNC uses, i think they are 59xx.

I have never had the network drives mapping problem, but i am sure that u can check that under local security settings.

check their website faq for more info

I'm also on a University (permanent) network connection, and used to have the exact same problem when trying to map my network drive.
I solved this by first seeing what alerts came up - in my case ZoneAlarm was blocking access from one of the University machines, so I copied that IP and added it into the "other Computers" part of the Advanced settings (found in the Security Settings window).
Next, each time I want to access the drive, I reduce the Local Security level in Security Settings to Medium, and map it as normal. When I have finished, I simply disconnect the drive and whack the setting to high again. Its not the best solution, but works for me...

The drive I map each time at startup is on a NT server (I amp pretty sure that is what it is, I just connect to the drive live any other WIN9x comp). And as soon as I disable ZA I can once again access the drive again. Also when I have ZA running I cannot see any computers in My Network Places. I do have any of my drives shared, so that is not a problem. I guess that I can just disable ZA when I want to access the drive, but I would like to get everything working correctly. As far as the security levels, I have been using Medium on the Network side and High on the Internet side. Even when I would lower the Network security to LOW I still could not get anywhere.

Need4Speed: I have not tried to allow the Ports for VNC in the advanced settings
imhotepmp: Yes, I have looked for a service for networking and I could not find one. If anyone knows if there is one to add to the programs let me know
