Zipping/Archiving Photos on a Mac

Hi all, most of our photos are stored on my girlfriend's iMac. I want to burn backups to DVD, but we're well over 15-20GB of data last I checked. I'm not really familiar with MacOS, so I don't know what the best free compression utilities are.

Any thoughts? The only must-have is that the archive files should be decompressible in Windows without too much trouble.

OS X has built-in zip creation. Just highlight the files you want to archive, right-click, and select "Compress _ items."

That's not quite true. If you compress many jpeg images in one archive you will save space by getting rid of all the unused bits in the assigned blocks.
