*** FOR THOSE UNABLE TO FLASH TO FIRMWARE 1.07***

I think I've figured out a way for you people having trouble w/ the firmware program. In the case of some, when you execute the program, the pointer changes to the hourglass shape and nothing happens. If you hit Ctl alt del, you should see the program listed. Complete the following steps to be able to flash.

1. First and foremost, disable DMA and restart your computer.
------You may have to uninstall EZCD creator at this point------

2. Take the ZipCD and look for the file wnaspi32.dll in the setup folder.

3. Replace the wnaspi32.dll in the C:\windows\setup file w/ the file on the CD-ROM and restart your computer.

4. Go into the ZipCD and look in the setup folder again. Run the Aspi32.exe program and click Upgrade. Restart once again.
5. Run the Firmware flashing program again and voila, it should work.
-----At this point, reinstall EZ CD creator and enable DMA------

Good luck

Thats sounds right.

I would throw in this:

You also need ASPIENUM.VXD in your \\windows\system directory. If you do not have this there, and running APSI32.EXE isn't an option (yet), then perhaps go to http://www.driverzone.com/, find ASPIENUM.VXD, download it, place it in \\windows\syetm, reboot. Then you might be at a point where you can then run APSI32.EXE successfully...

Baaa, I say just wait till Iomega releases the "official" upgrade. The only thing you gain is a little faster ripping speed in most cases. So if it ain't broken...

BTW: Got mine @ CompUSA on Saturday morning, tried to price match @ BB but they ran out :-/

Another than faster audio ripping and bug fixes, does the plextor firmware add any new features?

So Franco, it was your fault that there weren't any drives when I went there this morning!

<edit>Nope, never mind, just looked it up. It's already compatible with the first firmware. But anyone know how to tell if these are revision "TLA #0101"? =)</edit>

I thought 1.07 also makes it CloneCD compatible?

What does flashing the drive to plextors 1.07 firmware do?

Well, you get two benefits:
Since your drive now becomes a Plextor, you can now use clone cd which can copy any copy protected CD.
You increase your DAE (Digital Audio Extraction) from 20x to 32x which enables you to "rip" music at a faster rate.

I was under the impression the drive id was still iomega after the flash, just the firmware revision changes, I don't see how this would cause programs to recognize it as a plextor rather than iomega. I thought the firmwares released were updated for the iomega drive id.

Yeah, it'll still say Iomega, but the firmware will be 1.07 and it'll be able to perform whatever the Plextor does. But programs will still see it as an Iomega.

Forgive me, but where do I disable DMA in Win98? I don't see any options anywhere for that.

You are forgiven :)

Richt click on My computer and click properties ( Or go to the control panel and double click system). Then click on the device manager tab. Click on the "+" next to CDROM and double click on the Iomega drive. Now click the settings tab and you should see DMA.

Any chance that the same kind and skilled souls who created the
programs to change the ID string for the Iomega 8x20 CDRW and
HP 40X CDrom to Plextor will do the same for us here?

It seemed to take almost no effort at all to generate the program
for the HP 40X CDrom (which is a Plextor rebadged) when that
was requested a few weeks ago...How 'bout this one folks?!!

Having this seen as a Plextor serves two purposes:

1) It will then work with the latest version of just about
all software. Some CD writing software doesn't yet know about
the Iomega drive.
2) You can use the PlexTools software with it.

I have a Abit SH-6 with the 815E chipset and I was using the intel Ultra storage driver that I add. It did not show the dma check box for the cdrw. So what I did was remove the intel driver and restarted the computer and dma box was back. Then I ran the firmware update and had no problem after that.

This drive should be ok with clonecd before firmware 1.07.....Iomega is slower to update firmware but the firmware updates generally mimic plextor...this drive should be dao-raw with firmware 1.04. REMEMBER if you hack the firmware and the drive dies there will be no warranty

The plex 12/10/32 was supported by clonecd with firmware 1.00...I bought the drive in June with a TLA#0000 and serial number 22157

The only problem maybe subchannel data/audio reading as some of the earlier plex drives have reported some problems.

Hey. I read something about certain TLA# having some kind of problems, but I wasn't considering getting a new burner at the time and I don't remember what exactly was said. Anyone know about this, or can point me to the right thread. My ZipCD has TLA 0203 and firmware 1.03.

Mine was TLA 0203 firmware 1.03 and I updated with no problems, WinME and I left DMA on.

Do I really need to mess with the firmware upgrade? I don't use the audio extraction and I don't use clonecd. Any thoughts on this statement?

Not if you don't tell them :) Besides, the Iomega return facility is 10 miles down the road from me:p I had to return my ZipCD 4x4x24 to them.
