It's $3.20/GB for me.
I'm getting my Maxtors for $.50 ~ $.80/GB

But I would love to fill those empty SATA slots on my LanParty II mobo.

Besides, I see so many Raptor deals, it must be a sign...

I know a lot of people scoff at the price, but two of these in RAID 0 is a pretty phenomenal setup. Worth every penny IMHO. :)

It figures that these would drop in price. Buy.com has the newer (faster and quieter) 74gb Raptor for $199 AR even less if you are a new customer and get a $15 coupon

Nowadays, getting a 7200 rpm Maxtor or WD for $.80/GB isn't too hard, heck we can order online for $1/GB anytime!

Raptor 36GB can be had for $3.2/GB
Raptor 72GB can be had for $3.2/GB (Newegg price w/o coup or rebate)

So, the question is...

Is Raptor 72GB or 36GB worth paying 4x the price of the Maxtor or WD???

I don't want to hear anything from people that don't have the Raptor, or else, people like Val will drive this thread into a 5 page thread about hard drive apologetics. I don't want that to happen.

I just want opinions from people who have Raptor(s) and also have experience with your garden variety 7,200 rpm drives.

Again, my question is... For those of you guys with Raptor(s) and Garden Variety 7,200 rpm Drives, Is Raptor worth 4x more???

Hey jodhas, check out this review. Even though it's for the 74GB Raptor, it includes the 36.7GB version in the comparisons.

My personal experience has been excellent with two 36.7GB Raptors in RAID 0, and I'm going for two of the 74GB versions as soon as the price drops a bit. My current setup is noticeably much faster than the single WD 80GB SE IDE drive I was using before. When I say noticeable, I mean VERY noticeable. Whatever you decide, I highly recommend two SATA drives in RAID 0. It's just freakish how much it will speed up your rig.

Yup Freakish is the Word. :) Raiding 2 15K RPM SCSI drives are even better ;) but I'll stick with SATA for their quietness.

Im thinking to buy two of these.
Is it a big leap from 80gb WDC Caviar Raid 0 to these drives?

Raptors in RAID 0 is my first experience with RAID of any kind, so I couldn't say for sure. If you Google it, I'm sure you can find comparisons of the two setups. :)

From the conclusion of that review:

Make no mistake about it- the Raptor WD740GD is the drive for power users, period.

The only thing it's not ready for is server applications...but I don't plan on using it for a server anytime soon, so I think I may have to find a 74GB raptor pretty soon :)

Yup, I now have two of these babies. Freakishly fast is the best description. The XP screen just zips on by.

keep in minde the raptor is mainly for high end workstations/ low end servers, it's not specifically a desk top part and shouldn't be compared to them.

If I ran an Ultra ATA 133 seagate HD and a Raptor would they run in Raid 0 or do they have to be the same speeds? If they can run together will the Ultra slow down the Raptor?

u can't raid a SATA and PATA togehter...
farther more.. if u use a converter.. the PATA drive would be limited to36.7.. and the raid 0 array would only be as fast as a pair of PATA in RAID 0

I just put together a system with these in raid0.. from the last drive being detected to windows approximately 12seconds. My personal best on my machine is around 25

I've not used PATA raid in awhile but i don't think it's near the raptors in speed. my perfect combo would be 2x36 in raid0 and 1x 74 on a seperate channel for games the load times would be awesome.

This is a good deal I only wish I could spend money on it.. too many other priorities.

For those who ask if it's worth it.. well you have to perceive whether or not it's valuable to you. for me there is no doubt considering I once spent 254.00 on an 8 gig WD drive.. "and that was the best deal at the time" to spend the same or approximately so for drives this fast. No contest I'd jump on em in a heartbeat.

I could have a terabyte in storage nowadays.. but I can't access it any faster than I did 2 years ago so what is it worth?

thanks for the deal OP.. I may squeeze it by the wifes nose :D

I would just like to know, how much will this really effect load times? I dont even use up my 20gb.... but if its a hell of a lot faster on loading things, id buy it
