Stopped by my local Microcenter for a CrossOver patch cable and came across a great deal. They have the New version of the ZIP 100 USB on sale for $39.99.

Yeah...How long until Iomega goes into the dumpster? Seems to
me that Zip drives, when considered against
CDRs at the current price of media and speed of burners,
don't have much of a competitive edge any more. Jazz drives hold
2.5 as much as a CDR, but the media is obscenely expensive.
Click/Pocket discs (or whatever they're calling them now) may
have a nice niche, but for many purposes things like the minidrives
will overtake them quickly (unless they can substantially up the
capacity over 40Mb without upping the price much). The Iomega
CDRW line is just rebadged stuff that has no competitive advantage.

So what's Iomega's next move?

I agree...though this is off-topic and not meant to be a thread crap, Iomega is definitely in trouble. Their days of charging $100+ for the drives and ridiculous prices for the media are numbered.

However, this is still a great deal. The USB drive is fast and easy to install. The packaging on the product even said it worked for NT4, amazingly enough. (last time I looked at it was about a year ago, though)

I did speed comparisons and the USB is as fast as SCSI Zip units. This and any other zip deals are still great for college students since many universities have Zip drives in the campus computers. It's also great for transferring larger files (game demos are usually under 100MB) to friends on slow modem connections.

Well I still think this is a great deal. If I had any friends that used a ZIP drive, i would probably get it, but I have no use yet. (maybe someday in college) But I'm using my burner now.

Reason I'm replying is to disagree with one of the above statements. The Iomega CD Burners are, in fact, redone Plextor drives (I think that's correct). But they do have an advantage, their software. Just like the Video Card industry with nVIDIA. They seem to all be the same, just with minor tweaks.

So Iomega isn't doing anything wrong with the burners. In fact, if I were to buy a new CD-RW, it would be the Iomega brand...

What's so good about the Iomega software bundled with their
CDRWs? Let's see, Adaptec EZCD4: Nothing exceptional there...
MusicMatch Jukebox...Well, nice, but not all that exciting, either.
What is the Iomega advantage in terms of software?

they aren't ALL plextors, and TDK's Plextor comes with better software than iomega, the iomega's bundle isn't great.

Just called IOmega support. The new model is the one looks like a "race car", while the old version is the one currently on sale at MicroCenter, like a "brick". The new model is a little bit smaller than the old one. MicroCenter also carry the "race car" for about $99. You may get it cheaper at Staples. :)

What is included in the package? Do you get a free zip disk and cable or just the drive. I agree that cdr's are much more cost effective, but it's a little more difficult transporting the cd burner around.

I got the race car drive, as you put it, for $39.99 at Microcenter.
They had a whole stack of them. The new ones. $39.99 each...
This was last weekend...

I went by the Santa Clara, CA store tonight and the Zip drives were gone. I did pick up some cheap AC powered speakers for 1.50 and a few keyboards for 1.00 each, (don't need to clean 'em, just throw 'em away and use a new one,;)). I also got Klippengers Tax cut 2000 for free with any purchase, (a 9.99 value, good until the 3-18-01). I sure wanted a 39.99 Zip drive. Oh well, thanks for the post.

BTW, that free Taxcut CD is also eligible for free MS Money Basic after rebate. Coupon is on the coupon rack at Microcenter (at least in the Santa Clara store).

I got me an orb drive... and i love it.. not only it has 2GB of storage per disk.. they not that expensive either... when i first got it.. i was affraid of the fact alot of people complained about the reliability and fragile disks stuff... but i have dropped the unit.. Not by choice.. hehehahahee... 2-3 times .. on hard wood floor... and also have been carrying this one disk for about 2 months now.. in pocket etc. and they still work great.. not to mention i get to link it up in my scsi chain... =) ... but ofcourse... not many people have the drives... would be nice to see more of them take oer the zip market though... =)

fargus, The Iomega USB ZIP drive DOES work with NT 4.0. I know, that's how I'm using it at work. It also works with Win 95. Iomgea developed special drivers for both of these operating systems.

I have a bunch of old 100's laying around and this sounds like a hot deal to me. I have already bitten the bullet on media and my old parallel unit has the "click of death".

Will the Micro Center PM with the copy of a recipt? If I can could someone send me a copy?

<< ....ummmm.... hooey. NT4 doesn't support USB. >>

Generally speaking, it is true that NT4 does not include native USB support. But Iomega developed some clever drivers that work only for the USB zip drive under NT. Go check the link to Iomega.com you don't believe me.

USB Zip OS Support

Here's a direct quote:

<< Microsoft® Windows® 95 / 98 / Me / NT® 4.0 (SPS or later) / 2000
(Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0 will not support non-Iomega USB devices while Iomega drivers are installed)
>>

Here is another direct quote from the same page:

<< USB is a type of interface for connecting peripheral devices to a computer and it stands for Universal Serial Bus. The USB port is the standard interface on the iMac computer and is also found on many PCs manufactured after 1997. In order for the USB port to be usable on a PC, the computer must be running the Windows 98 operating system >>

So, which one is correct? Is there anyone who has actually installed the USB zip drive on a NT4 system?
