Your zip drive might not be connected to the IDE cable...have you opened it up to make sure everything's set right?

Is this an internal or external drive? If external is it Parallel port or USB?
If it internal, have you checked the BIOS? If this is your first PC you might not know what I'm talking about, but the BIOS runs in the background of your PC even before your OS is able to start. Sometimes the issues lie there not in the OS. Usually on the screen where your RAM gets tested you can usually hit del to enter the BIOS.

What you see in the BIOS depends on the BIOS being used. Usually one of the first screens you will get to will allow you to say what is on the IDE channels and whether they are auto or on or off or whatever. If the one that is connected to your Zip disk is off then you won't see it anywhere. Some older BIOSs don't recognize Zip disks anyway so it might require flashing your BIOS. The other issue is how you have the jumpers set on all of the IDE drives in your PC. Is the Zip disk Secondary Slave or what?

If I had been able to detect my zip drive would that have been "G" drive ????
I looked at system info............I saw everything but no info on zip.
Aparrently Win2000 has built in support for Zip drive is there any way I can reinstall this feature????
OR if I reinstall windows 2000 will that help..........saying that I have never installed any MS product :-(

Okay, where the drive should show up in the OS is not telling me where it should be in the BIOS. When you look inide your computer you have two IDE slots one primary and one secondary. The hard drive will be attached to the Primary along with one of the CD drives probably. The secondary will then have the other CD drive and the zip disk. OR the secondary might have both CD devices on it. If the zip disk is on the primary with the hard disk then it MUST have the jumper setting it to slave. If it is on the secondary with one of the CD devices then the jumper setting for the zip disk depends on how the CD device is jumpered. If you are not seeing it at all in the BIOS then there is probably something not right in the connections/jumpers, or the BIOS needs to be altered to detect the new drive.

Once you are in the BIOS you should be able to hit escape to get to the opening screen of the BIOS and then you can go to "exit without saving" to get out and not change anything. This is basically the same thing that happens if you reset or restart your computer while in the BIOS. No harm done. If you make a change to the BIOS and you want it to stick you can select "exit saving changes" or something like that. Either way you will probably get a second dialog box to ask if you are sure you are making the right decision. Repond appropriatley and you should be fine.

IDE Primary Master Ricoh CD-R/RW MP712
IDE secondary slave Toshiba DVD ROM

IDE secondary master none
IDE secondary slave none................

Drive B None

This is what it said.I don't like the sound of none....??
What does it mean??

Well, it sounds like the BIOS isn't set up to detect anything on the Secondary IDE. It might be that the chap that put it together for you figured you wouldn't be meesing with it. Anyway, shouldn't be too hard to fix in the BIOS. BTW where is you hard drive??? If you have older Award BIOS, under Standard CMOS setup you s/b able to set up all of the drives for AUTO so that it will detect them. This will happen with the Page up/Page down keys or maybe when the cursor is there you can press enter and select from a list. I would set it to auto and see what it detects. If you can tell me anything about the BIOS I might be able to get more detailed info.

Bios version Award modular Bios v6.00PG

In the bios I saw lot of things under "AUTO"......so maybe the chap did it right..........well maybe not or I would not be having this problem.

Okay so when you went into the BIOS on the main screen it said that the Secondary IDE channels were set to AUTO or were they set to NONE? If they were set to none, can you move the cursor down and select both of them and set them to AUTO by pressing enter and then selecting AUTO under type? If you do this does it recognize the new device?

OK ...I will do that..........but is there any chance that it will mess up anything else????
As right now the system is perfect apart from thr zip drive.

Second when I went into the bios....when I pressed escape..it said do you want to quit Y/N n
I could not escape...I had to press reset on the computer.............pressing Y or N did not do anything nor I could select Y or N.what was that all a bout ????
Anyway I will try what you said. Wish me luck :-(

Good luck my man. I think your BIOs is different from what I originally thought. I think when you want to exit you should make sure you are not on any of the selection menus (get out of those by making a selection or pressing escape) and then use the arrow keys to go to the right. The arrow keys will either navigate you through the page you are on (up and down) or they will naigate you through the available pages (left and right). Go to the Exit page and select "exit without saving" or "exit saving changes." Sorry I get you so scared working in the BIOS. You can only mess up what you change in there. Changing the IDE channels should not affect anything else. I am still wondering where your hard drive shows up in those IDE channels.

sure mail 'em over. I can't promise that I will be able to help any more, but I'll see what I can do. By the way, did my last message make any sense with your BIOS or am I totally off? Also, is there a jumper on the back of your zip drive?
