Zip disks not seen by Windows 2000

Win2k SP2 shows my Iomega Zip 250 and says it's "working properly" in Device Manager, and I see it in my Windows Explorer, but no matter what zip disk I put in the drive, if I click on the drive, Win2k says:

Please insert a disk into drive Z:. I have my Zip drive mapped to Z, you see. I'm multibooting and Win98SE is reading the disks fine. Can I get an idea what might be wrong? Thanks!

I navigated through the Win2k help. They don't have the option for a Zip drive but they do have choices for CD Rom drive, HD and floppy disk. I went through the flow for the CD Rom and it didn't lead me anywhere. A day later I went through the flow for floppy drive, was allowed to pick the Zip drive out of a list of devices and indicated that it wasn't working and I clicked a link for Windows updates for the device. It looked like a generic Windows update, was over 5 MB, and I was dubious about this helping me since I've been doing fairly regular Windows updates and there was no indication that this had anything to do with the Zip drive. However, upon installation and reboot the drive is working again in Win2k. Why I lost it I don't know. Wouldn't surprise me if it stopped working, but it's OK now.

I already installed the Iomega Tools from the CD that shipped with the drive. Didn't seem to make any difference. It's the oddest thing. I can insert a zipdisk (250 MB), open Windows 2000 Explorer and left click on the drive and it says "Please insert a zip disk" along with a cancel button. Duh! Doesn't matter what disk. I just tried something - I right clicked the drive and clicked Properties. Properties came up, showed the space used and space free for the disk and then I right clicked the drive and it displayed the folders and files! Really weird stuff here. This is why EVERYBODY just LOVES computers...

Do you have a VIA chipset motherboard? I remember reading someware that there is a bug with some of the VIA chipsets, Windows2000, and Iomega zip drives. The drives are not seen or something like that. It was awhile back and I do not have that problem so I did not pay much attention to it. You may want to check some VIA forum boards if that is your chipset.

Indeed, my southbridge on my Epox 8K7A MB is VIA. I'll post to the Epox NG, and see if I can come up with something. Or, see if I can find forums at VIA's website. Thanks.
