Zip Codes less than 5 digits?

Saw this on the store locator for KMart...

(Add zeros if zip is less than 5. Ex:00123)

Ehhh? I used to live in 07480, i didn't write nor did i ever see anyone ever write 7480 as their zip....

Do people actually do that?

I didn't even realize they had zipcodes that started with a zero. Never paid attention to it I guess. Glad I don't work at a Post Office.

Maybe some Excel jockey wrote that thinking some zip codes really have less than 5 digits.

I was at a K-Mart behind a Canadian guy, and they have 3 letters and 3 numbers in their postal codes, but the input screen only takes 5 numbers. Figure that one out.

yes. countless number of time. I have a part time job with a research institute that developes and improves the software USPS uses to scan addresses. being say this, I know alot about zipcodes. 😛
