Saw in the ads sunday that both officemax and Best Buy were selling the new Zip 650 12x for $199.99. It has BURN PROOF technology but only re-writes at 4x instead of 10x like the Plextor. For $50 less it may be worth for some people like me :D :D :)

Buy.com has Plextor 12/10/32 for about $228 (after coupon) which is almost the same with the Zip 650 with tax.
I think Plextor is the best there is, it has faster rewrite and burn proof technology.
so, you might want to go with plextor instead.

So wait for a free shipping day. And move to a different state to avoid the tax :)

Any idea as to who makes this drive?

Edit: I know it says Iomega on the box. :) I am asking about the internals.

I personally have the Plextor and it ROCKS. No coasters and you can surf, chat, check email, all while burning. Plus its Clone CD compatable. Those are good prices on those other drives but for a little more you can own the Top of the line. Ciao for now. Ape Out.

Who needs Burn Proof anyway? It's been out for the longest time. It's called a SCSI Plextor and an Adaptec 2940. Multitask your brains out.

yeah especially a Adaptec 2940 SCSI card and a Plextor SCSI CD-R/W! jeez that'll set you back a bit, much cheaper to buy a burn-proof cd-r/w.

Does that 12x/10x/32x Aopen have burn-proof for $189?? that'd be a great deal if it does.

<< The Iomega® internal ZipCD? drive is the perfect complement to any hard drive. It lets you increase your storage capacity 650MB at a time. Pop the discs into your computer to read, write, or rewrite most CD formats. With CD-R and unformatted CD-RW discs you get 650MB of space or 74 minutes of audio time. Save and share original videos, audio (MP3 files) and photos on a CD. >>

Blah blah... Will it burn 700's?

According to Aopen's specs, there's no BURN-Proof listed. I'd guess the 4MB buffer is there to address that problem, at least partially. I don't believe Teac's 12/10/32 drive has it either.

For the price difference, the Plextor is definitely a better deal. You'll find extremely few Plextor owners that are dissatisfied, and for that matter most are Plextor fanatics. My first Plextor was a 2.2x SCSI CD-ROM drive that still works just fine, and I've been using them ever since. A bunch of us are still waiting for Plextor's first DVD drive.

Also, if you're doing DAE, once you've used a Plextor you ain't going back to anything else.

No the Aopen drive does not have Burn Proof. I sent them an email and they replied that they won't pay sanyo for it. I would imagine that trying to record at 12x on that drive would produce a couple of coasters. The only drives I've seen so far with Burn Proof are: Sanyo, Plextor, Zip Iomega.

If you know were the coupon is from buy.com please post it here as the Plextor for $228 is a great deal. I have not bought a new burner yet because I know the price is going to come down at christmas.

Well I checked out the Plextor with the coupon and it comes out to about $238.00 all totaled. The Zip is 199.99 plus tax comes to about $217. So it's $21 cheaper but you don't get the 10x re-write speed so for the extra $21 I would probably take the Plextor.

<< still waiting for Plextor's first DVD drive. >>

Yeah, you'll be in for a long wait. A year ago Plextor's web site FAQ stated that they were considering a DVD product. Now there's NOTHING about DVD drives at all. Still, if they made a SCSI DVD drive, I'd probably get one.

<< Plextor fanatics >>

You talking to me? LOL. I'm pretty happy with my 40X and 8x2x20 hooked up to a Tekram SCSI card. No need for an expensive Adaptec SCSI controller, my Tekram DC-315U has been problem free for me (Rubicon/Nowhereman has an identical setup working great under Linux) and only cost $29. Now, if only my 40X was a newer one with the 1.1 firmware instead of 1.0 (up to 32X audio rip instead of 24X)...

Anyone hear the rumors about an upcoming Plextor 12X SCSI burner with burn-proof?
