or do the mods have to agree on making someone elite?

Elite Members are given the rank, you can't earn it through post count. Though the majority of Elite Members easily have several Thousand posts. Either earn it by being very informative in posts constantly, helping out a project in Anandtech's DC Team, acting mature, etc etc.... stuff like that..

The Uber-Elite have there own unique rank. I can only think of 2 or 3 off the top of my head.

Post count determines you title according to this chart:

Member Ranking

Each author is assigned a ranking based on the number of posted messages they have made. The ranking appears underneath the user's name. Below are the current ranks.

Title Posts Required
Junior Member 0
Member 20
Senior Member 200
Golden Member 1000
Platinum Member 2000
Diamond Member 3000
Lifer 10000

"Elite" member stats and other "special" user titles require moderator intervention IIRC 🙂
