So I have been thinking about rebuilding my file server as I had a hdd fail.
Want to get a bit more monitoring/notifications of for example smart stauts/drive failure
It is currently built on WHSv1.
So I started to look into FreeNas/Nas4Free and doing some playing with them in a VM and had some question in regards to ZFS
But I just want to know what the difference really between a dataset and a volume is?
For example I have create a pool of 4 drives in zraid1 for a total of 40gb
It seems to create a volume, I need to make a dataset first.
But what would be the reason for creating a volume then, if i need a dataset first and i can create shares on the dataset?
