[EDIT: GRAMMAR FIX]

Stuff like this pisses me off errr, Teachers/administrators are soo stupid these days and I think that zero tolerance would more likely push someone into doing something Columbine-like. I'm glad I dont have to put up with that BS anymore cuz i'm in college now. The only reason Zero Tolerance is occuring is because they are doing it to kids and they cant do anything about it. There is no zero tolerance policy with adults (AND THERE SHOULDN'T BE) yet there have been many workplace shootings. I believe that the only reason that they dont implement a zero tolerance policy on adults is that they cant get away with doing so. Adults can do something about it and wont put up with it. I think if someone really wanted to go on a rampage in a school zero tolerance is not going to stop them.

Just my 2 cents.

It's all part of what Allen Lichtenstein, attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada, calls the district's "zero intelligence," rather than "zero tolerance," policy.

Sounds about right...

While that kid may have been a fool to say such a thing, it is an utter disgrace what happened to him. First of all, it wasn't said in school, so how he got expelled is beyond me. Second of all, it was such a vague statement that his arrest seems like an extreme over-reaction to say the least.

I blame the girls parents first for not having the sack to call the boy's parents. Then I blame the police for not showing a little discretion. Finally, the school administration sho be fired for gross negligence of their duty to the boy.

I would also like to know how they arrested him and have them go all the way to court without charging him with anything.

...nice to see folks realize that 'zero tolerance' is bad public policy. I like the incident where two 9-year olds were suspended from school for making paper guns and playing "cowboy and indian" in the playground.

All I have to say is:

This is about the first time I have ever agreed with the ACLU.

1)Thats unconstitutional
2)minor can't be held long without parents/gaurdians notified
3)regular people can't be held that long without a lawyer
4)whats wrong with what he said, he didn't threaten them at all, just insulted them. He is a young boy for christs sakes and now his life is messed up. Young boys say that stuff all the time. I suggest they sue.
5)Also the school can't expel him for that, its off campus, off time and unrelated.
6)Police can't arrest someone without telling them what the charge is.

I believe in zero tolerance but with justice, that kid didn't get one scrap of justice.

Yes, I am a member of the ACLU and the Republican Party, odd combo i know

For a small fee I would be willing to council Joseph K. and his grandparents on the wonderful monetary windfall they could benefit from through the legal system.

1)Which part?
2)they were
3)Yes something seems fishy here
4)It *is* a threat, but not one that warranted anything near that kind of response
5)Uhh, no

1. You can't be arrested without being charged.
2. True
3. And a minor, no less
4. It was an implied threat. Maybe. If you are stupid and hyper-sensitive and like to keep teenage boys on hold.
5. Innocent until proven guilty. As far as the school should be concerned he didn't do anything (yet)

I agree with this case representing "zero intelligence" instead of "zero tolerance". I sure hope this family sues the hind-ends off everyone involved. I know I would if my 14 year-old child had to spend ten days in jail, etc. etc., for something as ridiculous as this. There is no "profile" for these types of criminals, that is the problem. You can do a forensic post-hoc work-up afterwards and have all kinds of supposed "markers" for potential violence, however, none of these ever hold up because they describe about 90% of all teen-agers at some point in their development.

Yet again why public education in this country is a disgrace and embarrassment. The richest, most powerful nation ever in history, and our children are educated and administered by nit-wits.

Home schooling anyone?
