Zero Calorie drinks?

This is in response to the thread about the turkey flavored drink.
Maybe not directly in response, but it got me thinking. After reading the article that was linked, I pondered the following:

If you're drinking a soda that has zero calories, then what do you get from it? Wouldn't it just be water then? What's the purpose of it? How do you get the flavor and sweetness of drinks without calories? Doesn't aspartame contain any calories? What else is in it? Wouldn't it be a waste of money to buy a zero calorie drink when you can get water from the tap? (Using a Brita filter or something of the sort)

People drink sodas for taste, caffeine, and out of habit. Personally, I'm more thirsty after I drink a soda than I am before.

There's certainly nothing wrong with drinking water.. I've got a bottle right here (of refrigerated filtered tap water). I drink diet soda (Pepsi One, actually) for the caffeine, and gatorade for flavor.

There's new artificial sweeter called sucralose. It's made by substituting some hydrogen atoms in sucrose with chlorine.

Some people don't like water, some people like the caffeine, there are lots of reasons to drink it.

Personally I prefer unsweetened tea (real brewed tea, not that crap that they pass off as tea in fast food places).

I used to go out to lunch a lot. I'd spend $1.50-$2.00 for a soda with my $8-10 lunch. Then I was packing on the pounds so I started to drink diet sodas. On the weekends I'd get caffeine headaches because I didn't drink as much soda as I did during the week.

One day, I just said fark it. Why am I spending $2.00/day on a 0 calorie artificial drink that does absolutely nothing for me. So, I got water instead. Thus began my boycott of diet beverages and all things caffeinated. I really don't miss them. After a while I did miss a few soda's. I drink Root Beer at home, and occasionally at restaurants. But mostly I drink water.

Ironically, ordering water out is often more costly than soda. (Bottled that is). Most places have good tap water, but some don't filter it or use the dirty dish water or something... in which case I'll order a soda.

Cliffs Notes: I agree, it makes no sense to spend money on a completely artifical drink that can only harm you and tastes awful.
