Looking to get a 16 core, may wait and see if the X3D version gets a release date and the price is not insane, as I figure it will be 2 years until Z5 or ML anyway so the cost isn't that bad over 24+ months.

I'm most unsure about the motherboard situation, as I would really like PCIE5 for the graphics slot, and PCIE5 for 2 NVME slots as well. This might seem like total overkill, but I figure that's much preferable to the (IMO) stupid setups with more than 1 lower specced graphics slots or more than 2 lower specced NVME slots that I'm not gonna use anyway. We'll see if anyone will release such motherboards.

As for DDR5, I frankly have no idea how to play that game. Prices have been going down, and I'm not at all sure its worth gambling on buying now, considering who even knows if you'll get the rest of the parts on release date (many people waited far into 2021 to get their Z3 CPU's).

I will also be a first day 7950x builder.
Have some of new cooling hardware ready for the AM5 platform :)

New TechN CPU waterblock (among/the best for Zen3/Zen4)
New Custom cooling for DDR5
Cpu cooling loop looks like this:

Currently i'm eying these gskill memory sticks: DDR5-6600 CL34-40-40-105 1.40V
But also think there will be some better "AMD EXPO" memorysticks around release time of Zen4, so i haven't bought memory yet

Which MB maker has the best reputation for firmware updates for supporting future cpus? Gonna build an early Zen4 machine, with the intention of dropping a Zen5 or maybe 6 in it later.

As long as you get one of the top models, they're typically updated more frequently and for longer. They're usually very expensive, like the Asus Hero and Apex series. Although if AMD is being less shifty this time, they might all bring the support like almost everyone did (in the end) on the 4xx chipset motherboards.

So far, my best experiences are with ASUS and ASRock. I have dabbled with MSI and not found problems. Gigabyte burned me years ago on an RMA, so I will never touch them ever again.

Don't know about shifty, but unlike when AM4 launched and AMD were afraid of specing the min too high in case they alienated all the OEMs, this time for AM5 they've spec'ed larger BIOS flash space and USB flashback so hopefully there's no excuse to not support tons of CPUs.

When Ryzen was first released the board manufacturers didn't really take it seriously, considering the Construction cores history. So the first boards in particular were lackluster at best, and very late to market. Clearly this is no longer a problem.

I will wait for 3d versions, it will be excellent supplement for rtx 4000 series.

I might be in the same camp. I also need to see the RDNA3 launch to decide what video card to include with the system, as well as give Watercool.de time to release a proper block.

what PSU should i go with for 7950x and 2x 4090? Presuming 4090s will be 450W “only”.
Currently i have Seasonic Prime 1300W gold - and it was good enough to run 14C skylake-x, 3090 + 2080Ti combo. You think i might keep it for that new rig And will be enough?

alternatively i can buy the same PSU (but Titanium instead Gold, not sure how much better that would be) for cca 270 euros or Corsair HX1500i for 315 euros. That one is rated 200W higher, but not sure about Corsair brand or HX series - all my PSUs in last 15 years were Seasonic ones. then again, afaik Seasonic manufactures some psus for Corsair, maybe that 1500 one as well.

I am going to wait until launch, even if it means not getting my hands on one right away.

  1. We are likely to see a flurry of PCIE5 SSD and DDR5 module launches between now and them.
  2. We don’t know the TDP of the top end part.
  3. I am considering going the mini ITX route.
  4. AMD historically has had RAM compatibility issues.

Nobody can answer that for certain, however, unless NVIDIA has improved the transient spike situation, you are going to want a bigger PSU.

EDIT: I have a 1000 watt PSU and my 3090 used to trip it prior to a firmware update for the card. This is despite the rest of the system using under 200W.

i have seen Samsung 990 Pro being in preparation, i wonder if they make it till mid September. And whether it will cost more than 980 pro or replace it at the same pricepoint - more or less.

I know its early, but as someone pointed out, I better get my ram now before the scalpers are all over it.

To go with a 7950x, what do you think of this ram: (@nicalandia , since you liked, but did not comment)
I'm confused about that.

I have a hard time thinking Zen 4 will make such an impact on DDR5 supplies that it will not only dwindle supplies so low, it will also bring in scalpers trying to flip the remaining.

It doesn't matter. I need to spread out the cost anyways, so I will have a start now.

I bought 32GB G.SKILL 6600 just recently. Still have 32GB Corsair Dominator 6200 that I've had for only a couple of months. They clock around the same with similar timings since they have the same Hynix chips. Just wanted something new to play with. Could let it go at a discount if interested.

Although, if this DDR5 scalping craze is going to be an immanent thing (highly doubtful), I may just hold on to them until then.

Mine are going to be here tomorrow. And someone else speculated on price. Will they go down ? Regardless, I lost over $100k in my retirement account due to the current policies, so whats a few hundred ?

I got these:

The 401K dip isn't a realized loss unless you took it out. That few hundred is gone. Unless people start scalping DDR5 and you decide to sell for a profit.

It will be Zen 4 & Raptor launching at relatively the same time. Raptor still offers DDR4 support, but DDR5 looks more appealing this round.

If there's any weakness in the DDR5 supply, it will be felt. Then again we have to assume DDR5 production has increased in advance.
