Basically someone created a patch for the Japanese version of Link to the Past which makes items appear in random locations. The items are placed in such a way that you can still beat the game, but anything could be anywhere. Two players get the same randomizer seed and start at the same time and whoever beats Ganon first wins. There are people calling the matches, which really adds to the experience.

I don't know why, but I really enjoy this. It's nice to lay out on the couch and put these runs up on the projector while I work or nef at home. Has anyone else been watching these?

Edit: Here's the schedule (Google Doc): https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet...gUEmhSomv-e3vZvCw3vPapBPc/edit#gid=1203742759

Link to the Past is one of those games that I just have to open up in my emulator and beat it again every 3 years or so. Such an awesome game.

Alright, not going to lie, this shit is addictive to watch. And normally I'm a "Why the fuck would I watch OTHER PEOPLE play games instead of playing them myself" type of person.

Though I'm a different type of Gamer... When I play an RPG I have to accomplish everything (even when optional) like the golden sword.

I know, right? I was actually flipping back and forth between this and the Panthers game last night. When the commentators are good, it's really good TV. I'm kind of tempted to play (not competitively) myself.

There are GameBoy version competitions out there on Twitch. The one I liked with bigdunka vs PikaPals is the Japanese SNES version though. Looks like it's about over. There's another one running on one of the other SpeedGaming channels and I think there are a couple more scheduled tonight.

They do it with Super Metroid too...

Yeah they called dungeon maps burritos... Not gonna lie, that's how I thought they look all my life too.

Any idea where I can get this rom with randomizer? seems pretty fun

The way it works is that you provide a vanilla Japanese SNES ROM to this website (http://vt.alttp.run/randomizer). It will patch your ROM and let you download it back. As for the vanilla ROM, all I can tell you is that the name of the game is Zelda no Densetsu Kamigami no Triforce. I've never been entirely clear on how licensing for these things works, but I know we aren't allowed to link to ROM sites even if you do have a legitimate license to the game.

Okay, I've watched a lot of this and they really need to get some decent commentators. They're either dead inside or have been listening to too much Division III football radio and way over emphasize everything.

i also like to watch speedruns but ye, a good commentator makes all the difference.

to me the pinnacle will always be Quake Done 100% Quickest: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2OcR_0zCug

despite me being a QuakeLive player and having played FPS daily for 7 years now, i still get the brain hurts from watching this more than 10 minutes at the time.

Quake Defrag runs are pretty cool too, but you really need to be a quake player and know the engine to understand wtf you are watching.

True, I wound up investing 130+ hours in FFX because of this very reason. I've watched a lot of speed runs but this sounds pretty cool. I'm going to check it out, thanks for the share.

You're a looney.
The 3D ones are well and good, but 2 is just such a slog. I got a fair bit into playing through it again a few years back before I walked away.

nah man, i tried the SNES one and didn't last more than an hour. i have never liked any top-down game with combat in the same perspective, it just makes no sense to me.

You're still a looney. This just explains how far gone you are.

Also, if you haven't, you should give Shovel Knight a go. Much more satisfying sidescrolling action platformer than Zelda 2.
