what's the 35 mm equivalent? (this is a medium format lens to the 35 mm equivalent would be much shorter)

and is the sultan of qatar going to mount this on the back of his 100% chromed M3 or what?

How mucH?

Based on the claim that some of the lens elements in it are worth more than a luxury sedan, I assume in the hundreds of thousands?

What does one do with such a powerful, heavy and expensive lens?

Imagine carrying around the case for that thing.

"Hey honey, I want to switch to the Zeis 1700mm now."

Knowing what the 1200 5.6L cost, I wouldn't want to know the price of this custom lens.
wow.

Wow. What a colossal waste of cash.

I mean, yeah, great photos and all, but, I think this is more of a "I've got more money than I can comprehend... what sort of million dollar penis-stroke can I throw some away on today?" situation.

I can't believe that thing could cost much less than a mil.

Custom designed and built for one customer, and needing to retool their production line - someone must have a huge budget.

And at 260 kilos - it's gonna need to be permanently mounted in a truck.

That said, there is fierce competition to be the finest photographer in the world - in whatever field. If you've got the cash (and some of the more 'normal' telephoto lenses can cost up to $100k) then in the right hands it could provide a significant advantage

As long as they use it to provide us with celeb nip slips, cameltoe, and sex pics... Who cares how much it costs?!

You dont understand photography...

You have certain hobbies or things your really in to right? Would you not spend what was more then the bare minimum?

This is for some guy/ print in Qater. He probably has a few million burning in his pocket. Kind of like that guy who gave Paris Hilten a $13million DIAMOND. If you can afford it why not. Sure there are better ways of spending your money but it is his money...

Leave it to Zeiss to engineer something that maybe a handful of people in the entire world will actually use.

this is one of those Bugatti Veyron things..why build it?

because they can..and a few choice customers will end up buying it...and it will spark interest in the company that actually made it

It's not for sale. It was a special order by one very wealthy client. They're not producing them.

That's basically a 16.7" refracting telescope with all the fancy APO glass. Here's a 9.8" refractor from takahashi(basically the leica of telescopes), and it sells for $250,000!!!!!
Bah, that's only F/10. The Zeiss is F/4!

ZV

The diameter of the front element is what makes a lens expensive.. not really the minimum F/stop number.

The maximum aperture is a function of the size of the front element.
