The ZD Net review of the PIV 1.5 GHz was an interesting read. Though the article was fair and did mention that there were several areas in which the Athlon bettered the PIV, there was only one mention, at the very beginning, that the Athlon was running at a speed some 300MHz less than the PIV. ZD was quick to point out that the PIV scored very high in 3D graphics and video engoding, but only the video encoding, which took half the time the Athlon did, showed a gain that was better than what could be expected of a theoretical 1.5GHz Athlon. That said, the only test with SSE2 optimization was the video encoding test. I can't wait to see how the PIV does once there are benchmarks out with SSE2 optimization, which will make the testing more accurate. Any thoughts? In another ZD article about a minor PIV shipping glitch I found the following quote:
"The Pentium 4, which was officially launched Monday, is Intel's fastest chip yet. The processor will make games look more realistic, enable faster video playback and editing and speed up things such as downloading music and video encoding." Italics and bold added. ZD Net is no longer a source for my information, as I simply cannot believe they would claim a processor can influence download time.
