Al-Zawahri tape praises 'victory of Islam'

Associated Press

CAIRO, Egypt ? Al-Qaida's No. 2, Ayman al-Zawahri, said in a videotape aired today that the United States' recent decision to withdraw some troops from Iraq represented "the victory of Islam."

Al-Zawahri, wearing a white turban and gray robe and seated next to an automatic rifle, waved his finger for emphasis as he spoke in the two-minute excerpt aired by Al-Jazeera.

"I congratulate (the Islamic nation) for the victory of Islam in Iraq," he said.

Al-Zawahri apparently was referring to comments last month by Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, who said President Bush had authorized new troop cuts below the 138,000 level that prevailed for most of last year.

Rumsfeld did not reveal the exact size of the cut, but the Pentagon said the reductions would be about 7,000 troops, about the size of two combat brigades. The Pentagon has not announced a timetable for troop reductions, but indications are that the force could be cut significantly by the end of this year.

"You remember I told you more than a year ago that the American withdrawal from Iraq is only a matter of time, and here they are now ... negotiating with the mujahedeen," al-Zawahri said.

"Bush was forced at the end of last year to announce that he will pull out his forces from Iraq, but he was giving excuses for his withdrawal that the Iraqi forces have reached a good level."

Bush has not offered concrete details about bringing troops home but said Wednesday that "possible adjustments" would be discussed with Iraqi leaders if progress continued on security and political efforts.

Al-Zawahri said the American forces "with their planes, missiles, tanks and fleets are mourning and bleeding, seeking for a getaway from Iraq."

"Regarding your withdrawal timetable ... you have to admit, Bush, that you have been defeated in Iraq and are being defeated in Afghanistan and will be defeated in Palestine," he said, speaking calmly but forcefully.

Al-Jazeera said the videotape was dated in December but it gave no more specifics.

The most recent videotape from al-Zawahri, aired by Al-Jazeera in October, called on Muslims to aid victims of a massive earthquake in Pakistan.

"If I was comforting the Islam nation for its crisis of Pakistan's earthquake, I today congratulate it and bless the Islamic victory in Iraq," al-Zawahri said in today's tape.

Go figure. The left starts crying about withdrawl and end dates and this is what you get. It is hard always being right. As soon as the US pulls out of Iraq or sets a date this piece of crap essentially wins.

What do you think will bolster recruiting even more? An Al Queda that is constantly being attacked with leaders living like dogs in hiding or an Al Queda that can legitimately declare victory over the US. A US withdrawl will only embolden them to spread out and hit harder.

The short sighted (AND F*CKING STUPID) left just does not seem to get this. Regardless of the fact that this is about the hundredth time in modern history where this is the case.

True. Which is why we aren't going anywhere.

Secondly, though, I think this kind of nonsense shows that AQ is hurting, and hurting bad. Zarqawi couldn't even promise any new threats. It was kinda like political commentary...

We lost the day we went in....and the only thing "F*CKING STUPID" (to quote the OP) in this thread is the OP!

You are such an idiot. Its our PRESENCE and our presence alone of which these folks seek to rid themselves. Can you get that through your thick skull? We were not supposed to be there in the first place--THIS IS THEIR GRIPE. Jebus *effing* christmas! Yes, completely pulling out is a loss (for amurikkkan oil and halliburton). A gradual pullout, a handing over of power, a display that we are not occupierers, a modest display of honesty (a word BushCo does not know) is conceding defeat? What was that BushCo talk about building democracies? Man, you people are so gawd damn duplicitous it just boggles the mind.

Huh.. Iraq and al-qaeda just like log cabin republicans.. everyone who watches Fox News knows that .. and knows they, al-qaeda, ran Iraq and Saddam was just a good frontman for the operations..

So what's the alternative, perpetual war? I mean, if we withdrawl at any point, Zarqawi can declare victory. So since the left is so "fvcking stupid", what's the righty plan? Simply stay there, preventing Iraq from moving on, our troops presenting a target and being a constant reminder to the Iraqi people that no matter how many elections they have, they still aren't really free?

Well of course not, that would be stupid. The smart plan is to, as Iraqis stand up, we stand down. Those were Bush's exact words, right? After all this time, are the Iraqis not ready to assume ANY responsibility? Well that seems like kind of a total failure on our part, if we can't even pull out ANY troops without handing victory to the enemy. But what do I know, I just use my brain instead of getting my cues from terrorists. What did you think Zarqawi was going to say, no matter when we left? Guys like him are as much about propaganda as IEDs, he knows he has to spin this as a victory, even though being able to turn control over to the Iraqis is a victory for US, not for him. What's your brilliant idea, stay in Iraq just to spite him?

At the end of the day, it doesn't matter what Zarqawi says. He can declare victory all day long, but it makes no difference unless we're stupid enough to play his game. He WANTS us there, we're the great Satan occupying a Muslim land. What better recruitment tool for fanatics? We don't win by killing all the terrorists, we win by turning Iraq over to the Iraqis. Zarqawi can make all the noise he wants, but if we do our job and get out, there is nothing for him to fight. When we are no longer occupying Iraq, an Iraq that can defend itself, we won, no matter how many Zarqawi's there are out there.

You want to talk about stupid...take a good, long look in the mirror. You peole are so short sighted it would be funny if it didn't involve so many people getting killed. You think the war on terror is about finding all the bad guys and shooting them in the face, like this is some sort of video game or action movie. In the short term, yes, it's about troops and terrorists and intelligence and police. But in the long term, it's about hitting the terrorists where it hurts them the most. Even Bush seems to have figured this out, and all the tough guy bullshit from you guys won't change that. Zarqawi can blather all he wants, but if we play this smart (as opposed to you way) that's all he'll be able to do.

Seriously, what is your plan? Just stay, the body count rising every day, until some magical event hands us a victory? Are you guys waiting for divine intervention?

If I didn't know better, I'd say you guys WANT us to stay there. Not because it will lead to victory, but because you LIKE the war. It makes you feel strong and patriotic and gives you a nice big stick to wack the liberals with. But as dumb and as shallow and as self-involved as I think you guys are, I can't imagine even you guys would be in favor of prolonging a war that's tearing up a country and costing American lives just because it gives you a happy...right?

The plan is.. those (F*CKING STUPID) Republicans are afraid to admit they MADE IRAQ FAR WORSE THAN IT EVER WAS AND CREATED MORE TERRORISTS THAN EVER IN HISTORY

I wonder what the total count of Iraqi's murdered by terrorists is now.. Just two days ago they killed about 130+ civilians who were attending a funeral.. gee.. what a wonderful place to live

Indeed 😉

I actually think that the two sides on the Iraq war have a lot in common, I'm not really sure two distinct sides exist in the way we think of them. Despite what I said in my post, I don't think the folks on one side want to prolong the war any more than the folks on the other side want to give up and go home. But like a lot of wars, this one seems to have caused us to lose persective. It's not the warmongering chickenhawks vs the cowardly hippies, I think at this point it's a lot more about HOW we can get the best result, because I think a lot of us agree on what that result has to be.

Of course there are still the anti-war folks who can't get over the mistakes we made enough to figure out what we should do NOW, and they will be joined by the, in the truest sense, pro-war folks who are enraged that Bush seems to be embracing the idea of having an actual plan. But I think the more centrist, and IMHO, logical position is one a lot of Americans share.

QFT

I agree, it wasn't our finest hour. But I think it's important that we figure out what to do now. We're there, and that was a bad decision, but it's the Pottery Barn rule, we broke it, now we have to do something about it.

I believe that the best interests for Americans would have been to pay Hussien off. Would it be in the best interest of the Iraiqs? I seroiusly doubt it but then like the vast majority of Americans I couldn't give a sh!t them just like they couldn't care less about us.

I agree, too. 🙂

Colin Powell is the one who hung the "Pottery Barn" rule on this fiasco. Too bad he didn't have the integrity to get in front of this one or quit before we launched the first attack. 🙁

The "Left" didn't put the U.S. in the predicament it's in, the Right did. Bush did. Bush and his crooked administration, and all the fools that voted for them.

Ever think that most rational people can see this guy as the same as the one on TV during the initial invasion (the name escapes me) who was going on and on about "Us forces are not in Iraq, as US forces were rolling in? It is propaghanda, both sides can do it, and do it well. Also, both sides are using the propoghanda for there own sides, the US uses it on Us citizens to gain support for the war, he uses it on Insurgents/terrorist/Islamic soldiers to gain support for there war. Heck, from his vague statements he is pulling at strings, probally learned that from the admin in the first place.

Was that Baghdad Bob. Can't be too sure...after all, I'm F*CKING STUPID.

So now BOTH sides have declared victory when we are obviously nowhere near a resolution of any kind, let alone a 'victory' for one side.

Awesome RF, your assessment is spot on, as always. I mean seriously ... blaming the left for some BS line Zarqawi spews about "victory?!" Who-T-F cares about what Zarqawi has to say? I sure don't, and I'm on the left. It's like tying 9/11 to Iraq. It's beyond lame, but the irwincur's of the world seem to think it's reality for some reason.

Which leads me to wonder where the "personal responsibility" dittoheads are when it comes to the Iraqis. Seriously, did we invade a country so lame they can't even stand up for themselves when we hand them their country on a silver platter? I mean, come on.
