Zappos.com to pay Turnpike tolls at Allston/Brighton tomorrow evening

Tomorrow is likely to be one of the busiest travel days of the year, and to give motorists a lift, the online retailer Zappos.com has agreed to pay the tolls Wednesday evening at the Allston/Brighton Toll Complex on the Massachusetts Turnpike between the hours of 5 to 7 p.m.

During that period, tolls will be free to all drivers, including those who use a Fast Lane transponder, said Zappos.com, which is known for its apparel and footwear. Normally, the cost of the toll is $1.25 (or $1 for motorists who use the Fast Lane transponder).

Signage will be set up at the toll complex to will alert motorists that their tolls have been paid courtesy of Zappos.com. And for motorists who stop to pay, there will also be a “second, unexpected surprise,” the company said.

While Zappos.com is based in Las Vegas, company chief executive Tony Hsieh is a Harvard graduate, and his school days have left him a big fan of the Hub, a company spokeswoman said.

In the past, Dunkin’ Donuts and Maxwell House have sponsored similar toll promotions, according to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.

Good idea, I think Progressive has a commercial where the guy pays the toll for 100 people behind him, too.

On that note, I find Mass tolls to be surprisingly realistic. A buck here, 45 cents there. While Illinois, Indiana and Ohio charges Two bucks here, three bucks there, a dollar every 100 feet, etc. It's a crock...and then add that the roads are relatively crappy.

MA may have a lot of red tape when it comes to politics, but it's for the better since any raise in toll or public transportation needs to go through layers approval before it passes. That said, I think both the turnpike authority and MBTA are flat broke.
