zapped my self a little bit

i was taking an outlet apart in my dorm room to find the stud in the wall to hang up a guitar mount. i touched the outlet to pull it out of the box its in and it zapped me a little bit.

any health complications follow from being zapped? it didn't hurt, just kind of make me jump. felt like touching an electrified fence in a field (not peeing on it.)

edit: also how do i find a stud without any tools? if i tap on the wall i don't really know what sound i'm looking for.

edit 2: i have been drilling all over the place and can't find the stud to save the life of me, should i just measure over from the window frame to find the stud?

Hit the wall extremely hard. If it breaks, then there's obviously no stud there. If it doesn't, then you, my friend, have found the stud you're looking for. 🙂

Tap around until you hear something thats different from the surroundings. Chances are that's your stud

Unfortunately there are always tools when you go searching for studs. Whether it's the bar or the beach, they're always there.

You should be smacked simply because of how lame your post was! 😛

start tapping on each side of a window, below the windowsill. that is the sound you are looking for. There is always a stud each side of a window opening.
after you educate your ear and knuckles, go to the target area, and use a pencil and lightly mark where you "think" the stud is at.
In the middle of the presumed location, get a #50 drillbit and drill a hole through the sheetrock and into the stud, if you are lucky. If not, the drill will pop through into dead space. move over and try again. Patch the very tiny holes with anything you can think of, toothpaste, whatever. It does not take real spackle to fix a hole that small.
After you do that a few times, you'll get your ear and knuckles fine tuned.

Depending on where you live, there should be a stud every 4ft. If you have dry wall as a wall, knock on the wall and listen to the thump. The lower the sound, the farther away the stud is. You should be able to hear it if you hit it in the right spot.

Studs are every 16 inches.

16 inches should be correct for most places. Some dorms are really old so standards might have been different.

Or 24 inches depending on if there 2x4 or 2x6 studs.

Either way, it sure as hell isnt every 4 FEET.

dur, I was thinking about outlets and how far they have to be away from a corner... and thats wrong distance to (must have an outlet on most walls, depending on length, no more than 6ft away from one). Anyways, I kinda made a hole in a friends wall and the studs were atleast 2.5ft apart, but the house was quite old, atleast 40 years old.

It sounds like you grabbed it with your thumb and finger. The hot went from one finger to the neutral on the other. If you would of say touched one side with your right hand and the other side with your left. The electricity would of gone up one hand passed your heart into the other hand. It would of killed you.

Potentially killed him, but certainly not a surefire thing.

dude I electrocuted myself the other day too cause my cellphone charger broke and one of the prongs got stuck in the outlet and me being stupid tried to grab it. Whats really funny is I did it twice.
