When I build my new PC, I am thinking about buying a 4870 or GTX 260 and modding it with either a VF 900 or VF 1000 VGA cooler. Has anyone tried both of these? Was wondering about the temperature differences.
Will the 900 fit on the 3870? Can't say i'd see it performing any better then the stock cooler. Heck the stock cooler already has good heatpipes on it and vents the hot air out the back of hte system. With either cooler your looking ot get the heat stays in the system till it can eventually be pulled out by an exhaust fan. Now i think the VF 100 would show some improvment but i'd have to put a sroud over it to help dirrect the hout air out the back of the system like the stock cooler does.
Agreed. With those two coolers, it'll be dependent on your internal case temps, and how quickly it can dissipate the heat.
I've got a VF900 on my 8800GT, and the improvement was significant(15-20deg C.), but the stock cooler isn't very good, and doesn't vent the gases out (had to augment with a TT SL1).
I think with good case airflow, you may see a bit of difference with the VF1000 - but it's hard to tell.

.
well, if you have one, then yes, there not bad to recycle. If your looking to get one, then heavens no. There are other sinks much better that cost near the same.
AC Accelero S1 comes into mind.
But if those 2 are the ones your looking at, the VF1000 is better by a noticiable different.
