Zalman VF900 on X1900XT 512mb

I was thinking of installing a Zalman on my X1900XT ( can't stand the loud fan any more), and i was thinking of not installing the ram heatsyncs and leaving them bare. Do any of you guys do this? Any experience with the VF900 and bare ram?

**EDIT**

I have another question, if i install the ram heatsyncs i don't want the heatsyncs to be permanently attached, does any one recommend a specific type of bonding solution? i heard 3M sells thermal pads but i can't find a good place to buy them on google...

I wouldn't do it. The stock heatsink on the x1900xt covers the RAM. There's probably a reason for that. Go out and purchase some ramsinks. They're like, what, $15?

I'm pretty sure that most 1900XT's that fail do so because of bad memory. So I wouldn't take that chance at all.

There have been overclocking tests done "throughout the ages" (i.e. for a couple of years) and nobody's come up with a solid answer on whether or not those stick-on heatsinks help your video card ram in either stability or overclocking, at least with a cooler like the vf700 or vf900. With something like watercooling or another situation where they don't get much airflow, sure, but since these coolers are blowing air directly on the ram chips, there won't be much difference.

I didn't see any difference when I tested with my old 7900GS and vf900, but it's also very difficult to measure video ram temperature.

do you have the stock HSF? from what I ahve heard the stock cooler does a better job than the VF900. Of course is much noiser...

I speak from experience and yes the stock cooler does a better job of cooling than the vf-900. Honestly though if the sound of the video card is bothering you then you aren't playing your games with the volume high enough :😉

I use and highly recommend the Thermaltake TMG-AT1.

Nearly silent, drops temps considerably and keeps that "stock" look.

that TMG-AT1 looks interesting but it would probably block my SATA ports, it seems to extend farther then the video card itself and that's bad news for my SATA ports
