The Zalman VF700 gpu cooler is pretty cheap, under $30 from most places. I haven't OCed my card at all but plan if I get the zalman. The X800XL has a reputation for being bad overclocker, would this help me achieve 450-475MHZ core?

i had the vf700 on my 6800gt. worked like a charm, plus it was really quiet and ran really cool.

how much is that cooler? $40-something? For as far the x800xl dropped in the benchmarks (now low-range), save that money for an upgrade to a gtx 512mb like i am :)

unless you plan to stick with it for a long time, you'd just be puting a bow on a pig

I popped a VF700Cu on my 9800Pro for a minor overclocking gain (5-10mhz core) and to quieten down my pc.

The benefit I saw was the VF700Cu is extremely versitile and once Im finished with my 9800 Pro, I can take off the VF700Cu and use it on my new card. I dont think the mounting holes are going anywhere soon.

Exactly. I bought a VF700cu to replace my NV silencer 5 on my 6800GT. I will put the silencer back on and move the VF700 to my new card when I finish my latest build. Kinda nice that it is so versatile.

On a side note, is removing the stock HSF on the X800XL as easy as removing CPU heatsink? And how do I find the temp on my card? (Can't seem to find it in the catalyst control panel, not use to ATI cats 5.10)

ATITool is the program to use for temp monitoring, as I don't believe it is supported through the drivers with the X800XL.

ATITool does work w/ the X800XL, that's how I oc and control everything. I added an AC Silencer on my X800XL. What I found was that I was able to overclock a little higher, maybe 10mhz. So, for overclocking purposes, it's not worth it. But I did find that it dropped temps big time and the cooling fan can run silently, even at 100%.

I have ATITool, where is the temp thing located?

That would be a good question, but I don't have my ATI card anymore, but know it worked my my XL.

I too have an X800XL and a VF700Alcu it didn't really help me overclock (I top out at 415 core before it becomes unstable even w/ the new hsf(around 408 before this)) but its dead silent compared to the stock cooler under load, so for that reason alone I'd get one.
